Domain-specific transfer learning in the automated scoring of tumor-stroma ratio from histopathological images of colorectal cancer

2023

Tumor-stroma ratio (TSR) is a prognostic factor for many types of solid tumors. In this study, we propose a method for automated estimation of TSR from histopathological images of colorectal cancer. The method is based on convolutional neural networks which were trained to classify colorectal cancer tissue in hematoxylin-eosin stained samples into three classes: stroma, tumor and other. The models were trained using a data set that consists of 1343 whole slide images. Three different training setups were applied with a transfer learning approach using domain-specific data i.e. an external colorectal cancer histopathological data set. The three most accurate models were chosen as a classifie…

Low-Power Audio Keyword Spotting using Tsetlin Machines

2021

The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven Keyword Spotting (KWS) technologies has revolutionized human to machine interaction. Yet, the challenge of end-to-end energy efficiency, memory footprint and system complexity of current Neural Network (NN) powered AI-KWS pipelines has remained ever present. This paper evaluates KWS utilizing a learning automata powered machine learning algorithm called the Tsetlin Machine (TM). Through significant reduction in parameter requirements and choosing logic over arithmetic based processing, the TM offers new opportunities for low-power KWS while maintaining high learning efficacy. In this paper we explore a TM based keyword spotting (KWS) pipe…

Estimation des performances, test et contrôle des systèmes cyber-physiques employant des réseaux de communication non idéaux

2020

Wireless technology is a key enabler of the promises of Industry 4.0 (Smart Manufacturing). As such, wireless technology will be adopted as a principal mode of communication within the factory beginning with the factory enterprise and eventually being adopted for use within the factory workcell. Factory workcell communication has particular requirements on latency, reliability, scale, and security that must first be met by the wireless communication technology used. Wireless is considered a non-ideal form of communication in that when compared to its wired counterparts, it is considered less reliable (lossy) and less secure. These possible impairments lead to delay and loss of data in indus…

Designing a framework for assisting depression severity assessment from facial image analysis

2015

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders affecting millions of people worldwide. Developing adjunct tools aiding depression assessment is expected to impact overall health outcomes and treatment cost reduction. To this end, platforms designed for automatic and non-invasive depression assessment could help in detecting signs of the disease on a regular basis, without requiring the physical presence of a mental health professional. Despite the different approaches that can be found in the literature, both in terms of methods and algorithms, a fully satisfactory system for the automatic assessment of depression severity has not been presented as yet. This paper describes a propose…

Video-based Pain Level Assessment: Feature Selection and Inter-Subject Variability Modeling

2018

Automatic pain level assessment, based on video features, may provide clinically-relevant, objective measures of pain intensity. In various clinical contexts accurate pain level estimation by health care personnel is challenging. This problem is compounded by considerable inter- and intra-individual variability of both perceived pain levels and of the associated facial expressions, especially at low pain levels. Thus, providing objective video-based indices for pain level assessment is a rather computationally challenging problem. In the present work both geometric and color-based features were extracted. The most informative features were identified with lasso regression, and subject varia…

Towards Psychologically based Personalised Modelling of Emotions Using Associative Classifiers

2016

Learning environments, among other user-centred applications, are excellent candidates to trial Computational Emotions and their algorithms to enhance user experience and to expand the system usability. However, this was not feasible because of the paucity in affordable consumer technologies that support the requirements of systems with advanced cognitive capabilities. Microsoft Kinect provides an accessible and affordable technology that can enable cognitive features such as facial expressions extraction and emotions detection. However, it comes with its own additional challenges, such as the limited number of extracted Animation Units (AUs). This paper presents a new approach that attempt…

Fair Pairwise Learning to Rank

2020

Ranking algorithms based on Neural Networks have been a topic of recent research. Ranking is employed in everyday applications like product recommendations, search results, or even in finding good candidates for hiring. However, Neural Networks are mostly opaque tools, and it is hard to evaluate why a specific candidate, for instance, was not considered. Therefore, for neural-based ranking methods to be trustworthy, it is crucial to guarantee that the outcome is fair and that the decisions are not discriminating people according to sensitive attributes such as gender, sexual orientation, or ethnicity. In this work we present a family of fair pairwise learning to rank approaches based on Neur…

Classification of Heart Sounds Using Convolutional Neural Network

2020

Heart sounds play an important role in the diagnosis of cardiac conditions. Due to the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), it is problematic and time-consuming for experts to discriminate different kinds of heart sounds. Thus, objective classification of heart sounds is essential. In this study, we combined a conventional feature engineering method with deep learning algorithms to automatically classify normal and abnormal heart sounds. First, 497 features were extracted from eight domains. Then, we fed these features into the designed convolutional neural network (CNN), in which the fully connected layers that are usually used before the classification layer were replaced with a global averag…

Automatic Content Analysis of Computer-Supported Collaborative Inquiry-Based Learning Using Deep Networks and Attention Mechanisms

2020

Computer-supported collaborative inquiry-based learning (CSCIL) represents a form of active learning in which students jointly pose questions and investigate them in technology-enhanced settings. Scaffolds can enhance CSCIL processes so that students can complete more challenging problems than they could without scaffolds. Scaffolding CSCIL, however, would optimally adapt to the needs of a specific context, group, and stage of the group's learning process. In CSCIL, the stage of the learning process can be characterized by the inquiry-based learning (IBL) phase (orientation, conceptualization, investigation, conclusion, and discussion). In this presentation, we illustrate the potential of a…
