Ligation of pigments to proteins of the thylakoid membrane is a central step in the assembly of the photosynthetic apparatus in higher plants. Because of the potentially damaging photooxidative activity of chlorophylls, it is likely that between their biosynthesis and final assembly, chlorophylls will always be bound to protein complexes in which photooxidation is prevented by quenchers such as carotenoids. Such complexes may include chlorophyll carriers and/or membrane receptors involved in protein insertion into the membrane. Terpenoids represent the most widespread group of natural products and can be found in all classes of living things. Many defensive compounds include sesquiterpenoids and diterpenoids from angiosperm species. Several terpenoids are biologically active and are exploited in the fight against cancer, malaria, inflammation, and a variety of infectious diseases. The depth distribution of plutonium, americium, and Cs-137 originating front the 1986 accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) was investigated in several soil profiles in the vicinity from Belarus. The vertical migration of transuranic elements in soils typical of the 30 km relocation area around Chernobyl NPP was studied using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), alpha spectrometry, and gamma spectrometry. Transuranic concentrations in upper soil layers ranged from 6 x 10(-12) g g(-1) to 6 x 10(-10) g g(-1) for plutonium and from 1.8 x 10(-13) g g(-1) to 1.6 x 10(-11) g g(-1) for americium. Application of pressurized fluid extraction to determine cadmium and zinc in plants

Abstract A procedure for the determination of Cd and Zn in plants is proposed. The metals are extracted by pressurized fluid extraction (PFE). Operational conditions are: pressure 1500 psi, temperature 75 °C, static time 5 min, flush volume 35%, purge time 60 s, cycles 1 and 1,2-diaminocyclohexane- N , N , N ′, N ′-tetraacetic acid (CDTA) 0.01 M at pH 4.5 as extracting solution. Abstract Therefore the carried out study aimed at determination of the effect of high-calcium brown coal ash and compost being produced from municipal sewage sludge on the content and bioaccumulation of heavy metals in potato tubers, wheat grains and rapeseeds during a three-year period. Rapeseeds contained most Cd whereas wheat rains less.
