Donor site morbidity of the posterior conchal region.

2009

BACKGROUND The perichondral cutaneous graft (PCCG) from the posterior conchal region is an elegant solution for the coverage of facial defects with particular stability requirements. The donor defect can easily be covered with a transposition flap from the postauricular region. Although this region is a common donor site for skin grafts and has an important supporting function for glasses or hearing aids, little is known about long-term morbidity after graft harvest. OBJECTIVE To assess the morbidity of the posterior concha and the postauricular region in terms of pain, scar formation, and patient satisfaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective study of 16 patients who had a PCCG harves…

Value of the deep femoral artery as alternative inflow source in infrainguinal bypass surgery.

2013

Background The purpose of this study was to analyze the long-term results of infrainguinal bypass surgery using the deep femoral artery (DFA) as the inflow source. Methods Between 1998 and 2011, 88 bypasses of the lower limb were placed in 86 patients (mean age 71 years) using the deep femoral artery as inflow. Patients' records were retrieved from a computerized database and analyzed retrospectively. Results Critical limb ischemia (rest pain/tissue loss) was the indication in the majority (87.5%) of cases. The distal anastomosis of the bypass grafts was located at the popliteal level in 32 cases and the tibial (pedal) level in 52 cases, respectively, with the autologous vein as conduit in …

CT Angiography at 24 Months Demonstrates Durability of EVAR With the Use of Chimney Grafts for Pararenal Aortic Pathologies

2013

PURPOSE: To present the 24-month radiological follow-up data for patients with pararenal aortic pathologies treated with chimney and periscope grafts during endovascular repair. METHODS: Between January 2008 and December 2011, 124 high-risk patients with complex pararenal aortic pathologies were treated using the chimney technique at 2 European vascular and cardiovascular centers with advanced experience of the described technique. In particular, 50 patients were treated at Site 1 and 74 at Site 2. Forty (32.2%) patients (32 men; mean age 79.2±4.9 years) completed computed tomographic angiography follow-up at 24 months postoperatively. RESULTS: The overall technical success was 100%, and th…

Patency of renal and visceral vessels after open thoracoabdominal aortic replacement.

2015

Objective In thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs), a paradigm shift is observed from open surgery toward total endovascular aortic repair using fenestrated and branched endografts. Whereas outcome after open replacement in terms of mortality and paraplegia has been evaluated extensively, no studies exist addressing long-term patency of visceral and renal vessels. To enable comparison of target vessel patency between open and endovascular treatment, we analyzed our series of open TAAA replacements. Methods Our vascular surgery database was screened for patients who received open TAAA replacement between 1998 and 2012, and patient records were analyzed retrospectively. All available imag…

Femoropopliteal prosthetic bypass with glutaraldehyde stabilized human umbilical vein (HUV).

2007

Objective Femoropopliteal bypass still is the standard surgical therapy for disabling claudication and critical ischemia. When autologous vein is not suitable synthetic or biological prostheses may be considered. Second generation glutaraldehyde tanned human umbilical vein (HUV) graft was chosen for above and below knee femoropopliteal bypass when autologous vein was not available. A single center experience regarding long-term graft function, secondary reinterventions, and potential biodegeneration of the HUV is presented. Methods Between January 1994 and January 2005, 211 consecutive femoropopliteal bypass operations with HUV (65 above knee and 146 below knee) were performed in 197 patien…

Equally Interchangeable? How Sex and Gender Affect Transplantation

2019

Organ transplantation as an option to overcome end-stage diseases is common in countries with advanced healthcare systems and is increasingly provided in emerging and developing countries. A review of the literature points to sex- and gender-based inequity in the field with differences reported at each step of the transplant process, including access to a transplantation waiting list, access to transplantation once waitlisted, as well as outcome after transplantation. In this review, we summarize the data regarding sex- and gender-based disparity in adult and pediatric kidney, liver, lung, heart, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and argue that there are not only biological but al…

Surgical conversion with graft salvage as a definitive treatment for persistent type II endoleak causing sacenlargement

2015

Objective The goal of this study was to present open surgical conversion with graft salvage or "semiconversion" as a definitive and safe treatment for untreatable and persistent type II endoleaks causing sac enlargement after endovascular aneurysm repair. Methods Between January 2001 and December 2014, 25 of 1623 endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) patients were selected as candidates for open semiconversion. The indication was persistent type II endoleak in 13 patients (12 of whom received previous attempts of embolization), type I and II endoleak in 2 patients, and sac growth without imaging evidence of endoleak in the other 10. After the infrarenal aorta was prepared (via a retroperitoneal…

Commentary on “Effects of patients' understanding and choice of surgical types on postoperative outcomes of Peyronie's disease: a single-center retro…

2021

Surgical correction can be considered for treating patients with a chronic phase of Peyronie's disease (PD) and persistent penile curvature. In clinical practice, some patients pay too much attention to surgical complications and refuse the recommended feasible surgical types. Meanwhile, they require operations according to their preferences. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of patients’ own choice of surgical type on postoperative satisfaction. This retrospective study analyzed data from 108 patients with PD who underwent surgical correction according to doctors’ recommendations or patients’ own demands. The objective and subjective surgical outcomes were assessed. Patients’ unders…

Ex vivo T-cell depletion vs post-transplant cyclophosphamide, sirolimus, and mycophenolate mofetil as graft-vs-host disease prophylaxis for allogenei…

2021

Objective To compare the efficacy and safety of CD34+ selected ex vivo T-cell depletion (TCD) vs post-transplant cyclophosphamide, sirolimus, and mycophenolate mofetil (PTCy-Sir-MMF) as graft-vs-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis. Methods We retrospectively included patients who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) with either TCD (n = 38) or PTCy-Sir-MMF (n = 91). Results Cumulative incidence of neutrophil and platelet recovery was 92% vs 99% (P = .06) and 89% vs 97% (P = .3) in TCD and PTCy-Sir-MMF, respectively. Cumulative incidences of aGHVD grade II-IV, III-IV, and moderate to severe cGVHD were 11% vs 19% (P = .2), 3% vs 2% (P = .9), and 3% vs 36% (P < …
