Hierarchies of knowledge, incommensurabilities and silences in South African ECD policy: Whose knowledge counts?
2017
AbstractPolicy for young children in South Africa is now receiving high-level government support through the ANC’s renewed commitment to redress poverty and inequity and creating ‘a better life for all’ as promised before the 1994 election. In this article, I explore the power relations, knowledge hierarchies and discourses of childhood, family and society in National Curriculum Framework (NCF) as it relates to children’s everyday contexts. I throw light on how the curriculum’s discourses relate to the diverse South African settings, child rearing practices and world-views, and how they interact with normative discourses of South African policy and global early childhood frameworks. The NCF…
Revealing colonial power relations in early childhood policy making: An autoethnographic story on selective evidence
2021
The COVID-19 pandemic exposes uncertainty, instability and glaring inequality that requires urgent global policy decisions. Historically, bureaucrats regard uncertainty as the enemy and look for tested solutions (Stevens, 2011). In contrast, Fielding & Moss (2010) acknowledge an uncertain future and encourage shifting policy making towards the search for possibilities instead of replicating singular solutions. Escobar (2020) advocates for pluriversal politics, with many possibilities created through collective decision-making by autonomous interlinked networks. In this paper, I combine autoethnography with policy analysis drawing on my own experience in South African early childhood pol…
Optical properties of conductive carbon-based nanomaterials
2016
The interaction of light with carbon nanomaterials is the main focus of this thesis. I explore several nanostructured systems involving different allotropes of carbon, and characterize them both electrically, if applicable, and optically. Special attention is paid to search for plasmon-like excitations on the systems, or utilizing surface plasmons on characterization. The first objective is to achieve control of carbon nanotube (CNT) conductivity with surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which resulted in the first CNT field-effect transistor (FET) that can be gated definitively with SPPs. The second objective is the investigation of optical properties of various thin carbon-based molecular n…
Electronic and vibrational spectroscopic studies of gold-nanoclusters
2016
Gold nanoclusters are a peculiar new material with properties between that of bulk metal and single atoms. They show size-dependent evolution of optical and electronic properties sensitive to the change of single atom or single electron in the system. Understanding the relationship between structure and properties is important to both fundamental scientific question of the role of the quantum size effects in small metal-clusters, and to application of nanoclusters in e.g. photonics, nanoelectronics, and heterogeneous catalysis. In this thesis four spectroscopic studies of monolayer-protected gold-nanoclusters are presented. The optical gap of the Au144(PET)60 and (Au/Ag)144(PET)60 (PET: pheny…

Superfluid weight and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature of twisted bilayer graphene
2019
We study superconductivity of twisted bilayer graphene with local and non-local attractive interactions. We obtain the superfluid weight and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature for microscopic tight-binding and low-energy continuum models. We predict qualitative differences between local and non-local interaction schemes which could be distinguished experimentally. In the flat band limit where the pair potential exceeds the band width we show that the superfluid weight and BKT temperature are determined by multiband processes and quantum geometry of the band.
Time-dependent quantum transport in nanosystems : a nonequilibrium Green's function approach
2016
A time-dependent extension to the Landauer–Büttiker approach to study transient quantum transport in arbitrary junctions composed of leads and conducting devices is developed. The nonequilibrium Green’s function approach is employed for describing the charge and heat transport dynamics. The importance of the developed method is that it provides a closed formula for the time-dependent density matrix in both electronic and phononic systems. In the electronic case the nonequilibrium conditions are due to a switch-on of a bias voltage in the leads or a perturbation in the junction whereas in the phononic case the central region of interest is coupled to reservoirs of di erent temperatures. In b…

Can you imagine? An imaginary of Finland's higher education as anti-oppressive, intersectional practice
2022
This chapter presents an imagined future scenario following a tweet by Minister of Interior Maria Ohisalo in June 2020 on Finland’s Government Action Plan for Gender Equality. In our counterfactual imaginary, the government resigns and new elections result in a victory of the Left and Green parties, which were leading the polls at the time. We examine how Finnish higher education (HE) could develop in response to calls for intersectional and anti-oppressive practice on the basis of existing research, the Government Action Plan for Gender Equality, and the Higher Education Accessibility plan. Our counterfactual framework critically examines historical processes and possible futures emerging …
