Patient outcomes in two steroid-free regimens using tacrolimus monotherapy after daclizumab induction and tacrolimus with mycophenolate mofetil in li…
2008
Introduction. Long-term steroid administration may predispose liver transplant recipients to infectious and metabolic complication. Maintaining effective immunoprophylaxis while minimizing the negative consequences of steroid therapy could be a key factor in improving clinical outcomes.Methods. Six hundred two patients were randomized to receive tacrolimus (TAC) immunosuppression with a single-steroid bolus and two doses of daclizumab (DAC) or mycophenolate mofetil (MMF).Results. The incidence of biopsy-proven acute rejection was 19.7% in the TAC/DAC group and 16.2% in the TAC/ MMF group (ns). Three-month patient and graft survival were similar. Steroid use at month-3 was low at 5.5% in the…
Advances in Design, Simulation and Manufacturing IV
2021
This book reports on topics at the interface between mechanical and chemical engineering, emphasizing design, simulation, and manufacturing. Specifically, it covers recent developments in the mechanics of solids and structures, numerical simulation of coupled problems, including fatigue, fluid behavior, particle movement, pressure distribution. Further, it reports on developments in chemical process technology, heat and mass transfer, energy-efficient technologies, and industrial ecology. Based on the 4th International Conference on Design, Simulation, Manufacturing: The Innovation Exchange (DSMIE-2021), held on June 8-11, 2021, in Lviv, Ukraine, this second volume of a 2-volume set provide…
Gonadotropic Therapy in Men with Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism
1984
Many therapeutic regimens, differing in dose and duration, have been employed in the treatment of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. This study presents the results from a regimen of hCG plus hMG plus testosterone combined treatment in 15 patients affected by selective hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. The patients were homogeneous in age (16–23 years), testicular size, aspermia, absence of prior hormonal treatment, and normal karyotype. They were administered 5000 IU of hCG plus 75 IU of hMG twice a week for two months and a single dose of depo-testosterone (250 mg) in the third month. This therapeutic plan was carried out continuously for eight three-month cycles (24 months). Sexual maturation a…
Final results of OV16, a phase III randomized study of sequential cisplatin-topotecan and carboplatin-paclitaxel (CP) versus CP in first-line chemoth…
2013
5502 Background: Topotecan was evaluated in a novel combination regimen in comparison to standard therapy in front-line EOC. Methods: Women with newly diagnosed advanced EOC stages IIB-IV, ECOG performance status (PS) 0-1, age < 75, were randomized to either Arm 1: cycles 1 - 4: cisplatin 50 mg/m2 d1 plus topotecan 0.75 mg/m2 d1-5 IV; cycles 5 - 8: paclitaxel 175 mg/m2over 3 hrs d1 followed by carboplatin AUC5 day 1 or Arm 2: paclitaxel plus carboplatin as in Arm 1 for 8 cycles. The primary endpoint was progression free survival (PFS) and secondary endpoints included objective response, overall survival (OS), adverse event (AE) and Quality of Life (QoL). The sample size required 800 pts…
Political Cultures in the Fascist Italy: Transversalities and Contradictions
2019
As the first totalitarian experience, the construction of the fascist regime in Italy was a long, complex process, which remained unfinished by its very nature. Hence, this text attempts to explore some of the specific features of that process. In line with the overall approach of this volume, the principal aim is here to understand the role of the various political cultures in constructing the regime, particularly the fascist and nationalist ones. In that sense, Saz concludes that both were important and there were collaboration and transversalities, mutual understanding, contradictions, struggles and cracks between them. But this always happened from and towards a fascist hegemony, with t…
Interferon alfa for chronic hepatitis B infection: Increased efficacy of prolonged treatment
1999
Interferon alfa (IFN-alpha) is the primary treatment for chronic hepatitis B. The standard duration of IFN-alpha therapy is considered 16 weeks; however, the optimal treatment length is still poorly defined. We evaluated the efficacy and acceptability of prolonged IFN-alpha treatment in patients with chronic hepatitis B. To investigate whether treatment prolongation could enhance the rate of hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) seroconversion, we conducted a prospective, controlled, multicenter trial in which all patients were treated with a standard regimen of 10 million units IFN-alpha 3 times per week over 16 weeks. Patients who were still HBeAg-positive after 16 weeks of therapy were randomize…
PEG IFN alfa-2a vs. alfa-2b: And the winner is …?
2009
Abstract Peginterferon alfa-2b or alfa-2a with ribavirin for treatment of hepatitis C infection. McHutchison JG, Lawitz EJ, Shiffman ML, Muir AJ, Galler GW, McCone J, Nyberg LM, Lee WM, Ghalib RH, Schiff ER, Galati JS, Bacon BR, Davis MN, Mukhopadhyay P, Koury K, Noviello S, Pedicone LD, Brass CA, Albrecht JK, Sulkowski MS; IDEAL Study Team. N Engl J Med 2009 Aug 6;361(6):580–93. Background Treatment guidelines recommend the use of peginterferon alfa-2b or peginterferon alfa-2a in combination with ribavirin for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. However, these regimens have not been adequately compared. Methods At 118 sites, patients who had HCV genotype 1 infection and who had not …
Regional existence of the "Gypsy nation" : Lorraine’s "Bohémiens" at the end of the Ancien Regime : (seventeenth-eighteenth centuries)
2015
In the eighteenth century, the "Bohémiens" are already in the kingdom of France and its provinces since over three hundred years. In the last two centuries of the Ancien Regime, their lifestyle is progressively criminalized, resulting in their rejection in marginal fringes of vagabonds, thieves, etc. Therefore, in the historiography of these groups in Western Europe in the modern era, criminal law and judicial archives dominate. However, it must be moved beyond an unambiguous reading of these documents. The study of the regulation of the "Bohémiens" in Lorraine (in fact Gypsies belonging to the Manouche or Sinti group) and considerations of doctrine provide a broad framework, but the many p…
Poder local y evolución social en el País Valenciano del siglo XIX
2019
This paper offers the achievements and lacks of the studies on local power in the ancient Kingdom of Valencia during the XIXth century. The breakdown of the Ancien Regime by the liberal revolution is the point of departure. The process of social change started whith the revolution continued ever after the failure of the democratic experience thet begun at 1868. To discuss these topics (not always shared by spanish historians), it would be proposed the analysis of local cases during long-termed periods and a social approach to politics, specially referred to attitudes and action of lower social groups.
Influence of vegetation recovery on soil hydrology and erodibility following fire: an 11-year investigation
2005
The present study investigates long-term changes in soil hydrological properties and erodibility during the regrowth of different types and densities of vegetation following a severe wildfire in the Serra Grossa Range, eastern Spain. Twelve plots of similar slope and soil characteristics, naturally recolonized by four different plant species (trees, herbs, shrubs and dwarf shrubs) were examined using rainfall simulations during an 11-year period. The mean erosion rate was 80 g m−2 h−1, 6 months after the fire under wet-winter conditions, declining to 30 g m−2 h−1 in the following summer and reaching <10 g m−2 h−1 after 2 years. Considerable variation under the different vegetation types …
