AbstractLeukocytes migrate from the blood into areas of inflammation by interacting with various adhesion molecules on endothelial cells. Vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1) is a glycoprotein expressed on inflamed endothelium where it plays a dual role: it is both an enzyme that oxidizes primary amines and an adhesin that is involved in leukocyte trafficking to sites of inflammation. Although VAP-1 was identified more than 15 years ago, the counterreceptor(s) for VAP-1 on leukocytes has remained unknown. AbstractNaturally occurring CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) represent a unique T-cell lineage that is endowed with the ability to actively suppress immune responses. Therefore, approaches to modulate Treg function in vivo could provide ways to enhance or reduce immune responses and lead to novel therapies. Here we show that the CD4 binding human immunodeficiency virus-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120 is a useful and potent tool for functional activation of human Tregs in vitro and in vivo. Dissensus, death and division

2009

The modeling of switching systems describing networks where death and duplication processes occur is described. A dissensus protocol, complementary to consensus protocol, is introduced and the convergence or divergence of the agents' state evolution is studied. We discuss some properties of the topology reached by the network when different rules of duplication and inheritance are implemented.

Fed-batch simultaneous saccharification and fermentation including in-situ recovery for enhanced butanol production from rice straw

Abstract This paper describes a study of fed-batch SSFR (simultaneous saccharification, fermentation and recovery) for butanol production from alkaline-pretreated rice straw (RS) in a 2-L stirred tank reactor. The initial solid (9.2% w/v) and enzyme (19.9 FPU g-dw-1) loadings were previously optimized by 50-mL batch SSF assays. Maximum butanol concentration of 24.80 g L-1 was obtained after three biomass feedings that doubled the RS load (18.4% w/v). Butanol productivity (0.344 g L-1h−1) also increased two-fold in comparison with batch SSF without recovery (0.170 g L-1h−1). In una società in continua evoluzione dove la diminuzione della natalità e l’innalzamento della soglia di mortalità divengono costanti il compito dell’Architettura è proprio quello d’interpretare le esigenze e i bisogni di persone che hanno perso il rapporto canonico con il mondo e offrire loro le possibilità di recuperarlo o di mantenerlo attraverso canali di comunicazione che sfruttino le loro residue capacità di comprensione. Lo spazio interno ed esterno assume così una “funzione protesica” contenendo ed esprimendo in sé le conoscenze necessarie per la sua corretta fruizione riducendo il senso di frustrazione attraverso la sensazione di sicurezza e di benessere che il malato deve percepire vivendolo. AbstractIn this paper, we evaluate price indices and hedonic price indices for Italian real estate data using multilevel models. The methodology is based on a random coefficient panel data model. We propose a Laspeyres-type price index and hedonic prices indexes based on some characteristics of the sold properties. The multilevel hierarchical analysis has the advantage of allowing the appraisal analysis for groups, and identified in the same sample data the hierarchical structures of market segmentation according to the parameters of the real estate segment. AbstractThe effect of ageing of adults ofEchinostoma friedi(Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) on the infectivity of miracidia yielded was analysed. Miracidia were obtained after hatching of eggs obtained from adult worms ofE. friedicollected weekly during the course of experimental infections in golden hamsters. Miracidial infectivity, measured in terms of percentage of infection inLymnaea peregra, was significantly influenced by the age of the adult worms from which the miracidia were derived.
