ChemInform Abstract: Preparation and Nonlinear Optics of Monodisperse Oligo(1,4-phenyleneethynylene)s.

2010

Oligo(1,4-phenyleneethynylene)s 1a−e, with solubilizing propoxy side chains, were prepared by use of Hagihara−Sonogashira coupling reactions. The synthetic strategy was based on a building block system and on the use of trimethylsilyl and triisopropylsilyl protecting groups that could be cleaved selectively. The extension of the conjugation with an increasing number of repeat units provokes a bathochromic shift of the long wavelength absorption and a superlinear increase of the second hyperpolarizability |γ|. The corresponding third harmonic generation (THG) measurements were performed using polystyrene matrices and variable laser wavelengths. We conclude that the conjugation length is much…

Ionic Liquids on Demand in Continuous Flow

2009

We report on the development of an alternative protocol for the facile, solvent-free synthesis of various novel imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) that affords highly pure products without the necessity of subsequent purification steps. The continuous approach is based on the combination of HPLC pumps with a micromixer and a capillary residence tube. Our system provides a high degree of control over the alkylation reactions due to a high surface-to-volume ratio and superior heat and mass transport. Within the scope of our studies, we focused on ionic liquids containing differently substituted phenyl rings and characterized these compounds with respect to further use for direct applicatio…

Synthesis and Properties of Some Simple Organotitanium Compounds

1986

Before embarking on a detailed discussion of the titanation of carbanions, synthetic and physical organic aspects of several typical organotitanium (IV) compounds shall be surveyed, including thermal stability, aggregation state, X-ray structural data and bond energies. Some of this information is useful in understanding reactivity and selectivity in reactions with organic substrates. Low valent Ti (II) and Ti (III) shall be mentioned only on passing; the interested reader is referred to reviews [1].

Oligo(phenylenevinylene)s end-capped with phenothiazine or triphenylamine

2003

AbstractMonodisperse oligo(phenylenevinylene)s end-capped with arylamines have been prepared via Horner Olefinations from bisphosphonates and arylaminobenzaldehydes. The influences of the conjugation length, different arylamine end groups, and of side chains with various electronic character on the electrical and optical properties of the chromophores are investigated. The elongation of the π-conjugated segment from 3 to 5 rings gives rise to bathochromic shifts of the electronic spectra and a slight increase of the oxidation potential. The same but more pronounced is true when the central electron donating ethers are replaced by the strong acceptor alkylsulfone. The electronic spectra of c…

Tristriazolotriazines with π-Conjugated Segments: Star-Shaped Fluorophors and Discotic Liquid Crystals

2012

C3-symmetrical tristriazolotriazines substituted with phenylene rings carrying lateral flexible alkoxy side chains were prepared via condensation/ring transformation of cyanuric chloride and tetrazoles. These star-shaped, planar compounds can form broad thermotropic mesophases. Due to the extensive π-conjugation, these compounds are highly emissive and the octupolar donor-acceptor electronic structure results in non-linear optical properties like solvatochromism. Brønstedt acids provoke halochromism of the absorption and of the fluorescence.

Macrocycles as Molecular Units to Build up Electroresponsive Materials: A Comparative Theoretical Investigation of the Electronic and Optical Propert…

1990

Besides their classical and well-known applications as, e.g., dyes, pigments, catalysts, etc. [1], phthalocyanines (Pc’s) have been of particular interest in many fields of basic and applied research concerning solar cells [2], photosensitizers [3], low dimensional metals [4], gas sensors [5], electrochromism [6], Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films [7], and nonlinear optics [8]. As an example, gas sensors [9], electronic devices [10], laser recording materials [11], and photovoltaic cells [12] can now be built from LB films of phthalocyanines. This great variety of interesting applications results from a number of unique properties that phthalocyanines exhibit On the one hand, they show an except…

Polymere ester von Säuren des phosphors, 5. Ringöffnende polymerisation des 2-phenoxy-1,3,2-dioxaphospholan durch Michaelis-Arbuzov-reaktion

1977

2-Phenoxy-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane (14) was polymerized by benzyl halogenides at temperatures between 120 and 200°C. It was found that the main chain consists predominantly of unexpected ethylene 1,2-ethanediphosphonate units 7; only about 10% of the monomer was incorporated as the expected 2-hydroxyethanephosphonate structure. An insertion mechanism, proposed by Harwood and Patel for the analogous polymerization of 2-phenyl-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane, does not agree with our experimental results. A hypothesis is developed involving a two step addition process, which exclusively occurs at the chain end. Alternating, one monomer molecule is added by a normal Michaelis-Arbuzov-reaction, and then a …

In the polymerization of isobutene catalyzed by aluminium tribromide and in the polymerization of styrene catalyzed by trifluoromethanesulphonic acid it is supposed that an inactive catalyst monomer complex is formed which is in equilibrium with other active species. The monomer complexation of the catalyst explains the S-shaped conversion curves and the complex kinetics of the polymerization. The value of the equilibrium constant Km (complexation constant) expresses what part of the catalyst may take part in the polymerization process as an active initiating species. For the system isobutene/AlBr3, Km was found to be 0,62 1/mol. In the system styrene/CF3SO3H, the high value of the complexa…

Influence of synthesis conditions on the morphology of Dodecasil 1H

1993

Abstract The synthesis of Dodecasil 1H was studied in the system SiO2/1-adamantylamin/NH3/water with the objective of controlling the particle size and the morphology of the crystals. Since nucleation occurs in a very early stage of the synthesis, the heating rate to the final temperature and/or holding points during heat up have a strong influence on both parameters. Crystals smaller than 150 μm could only be obtained by the use of seed crystals, which are completely consumed in the synthesis with subsequent new nucleation. Using seed crystals, the expensive template 1-adamantylamine can be substituted with cheaper reagents such as sodium dodecyl sulfate or trimethylethylammonium bromide a…
