Conforming to and resisting imposed identities : An autoethnography on academic motherhood

Purpose This research attempts to make sense of the experiences of two academic women who become mothers. Design/methodology/approach This paper is an autoethnography. Applying the autoethnographic method allows us to discuss cultural phenomena through personal reflections and experiences. Our autoethnographic reflections illustrate our struggles and attempts of resistance within discursive spaces where motherhood and our identity as academics intersect. This doctoral dissertation investigates PR professionalism and PR as a strategic expert function. The approach is phenomenographic and the research progresses through four phases: (1) building a conceptual framework, (2) conducting an interpretative study of concepts, (3) conducting semi-structured in-depth interviews among 37 Finnish PR experts, and (4) constructing a holistic model of PR professionalism. The interpretative study of concepts concludes that PR professionalism consists of expertise in management of identity, management of public sphere, and management of relationships, and its core values are respect, responsibility and reflexivity. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, millaisissa tilanteissa vaativan erityisen tuen piirissä työskentelevät erityisopettajat kokevat rooliristiriitoja ja rooliepäselvyyttä. Aihe on merkityksellinen, koska rooliristiriitojen ja rooliepäselvyyden on tutkittu aiheuttavan työmotivaation ja työssäjaksamisen heikkenemistä. Erityisopettajan rooliin liittyvien haasteiden ymmärtämisestä voi myös olla hyötyä koulujen toimintakulttuurin kehittämisessä. Tutkittavina oli 21 perusopetuksen vaativan erityisen tuen piirissä työskentelevän opettajan tuottama aineisto.
