Rural Artisans' Apprenticeship Practices in Early Modern Finland (1700-1850)
2020
Finland was a predominantly rural country before 1850. Its village communities, however, also required the services of craftsmen, notably blacksmiths, tailors and shoemakers. To regulate these artisans, the crown created a formal and regulated institution of ‘parish artisans’ in the 1680s that continued until the latter part of the nineteenth century. By 1700 a system had emerged of clearly organised craft training in the limited range of trades acceptable for ‘parish artisans’. This happened almost by definition outside the remit of guilds, which were located in towns. As a result, rural apprentices were not registered by any institution, but still abided by a set of rules that did not fun…
Feodaaliset piirteet nykyajan työelämässä
2007
Olen pro gradussani pyrkinyt selvittämään, voidaanko nykyajan työelämästä löytää feodaalisia piirteitä. Materiaalina tutkimuksessani olen käyttänyt työlainsäädäntöä, yleistä aiheeseen liittyvää kirjallisuutta sekä internetuutisia aihepiiristä. Keskeisenä tutkimusajatuksenani on ollut, onko 1990-luvun alusta lähtien Suomessa toteutunut työlainsäädännön kokonaisvaltainen uudistaminen tuonut työelämään sellaisia elementtejä, joita voisi nimittää feodaalisiksi piirteiksi liittyen keskiaikaiseen konkreettiseen feodalismiin. Aihepiiriä on käsitelty melko abstraktilla tasolla, sitoutumatta kovin voimakkaasti varsinaisen historiallisen feodalismin melko tiukkoihinkin määrittelykriteereihin. Käsitte…
The evolutionary dynamics of adaptive virginity, sex-allocation and altruistic helping in haplodiploid animals
2018
In haplodiploids, females can produce sons from unfertilized eggs without mating. However, virgin reproduction is usually considered to be a result of a failure to mate, rather than an adaptation. Here, we build an analytical model for evolution of virgin reproduction, sex-allocation, and altruistic female helping in haplodiploid taxa. We show that when mating is costly (e.g., when mating increases predation risk), virginity can evolve as an adaptive female reproductive strategy. Furthermore, adaptive virginity results in strongly divergent sex-ratios in mated and virgin queen nests ("split sex ratios"), which promotes the evolution of altruistic helping by daughters in mated queen nests. Introduction to the special issue: Beyond self-fashioning and freedom—bending, breaking, and adhering to rules in religious contexts
2023
Rules are a crucial part of much religious thought and practice. Their importance or insignificance, their strictness or laxness, and their rigidity or flexibility in the face of change are constant themes of debate, both within and outside religious communities. Yet they have arguably not been given the attention they deserve within recent anthropology. Since the rise of practice theory, rules have more often been considered something to look past in the search for agency. Where the new anthropology of ethics has addressed religious orthopraxy, it has largely been through the lens of the cultivation of virtuous self, or the ways in which moral rules may become especially salient in extrao…

Harmonic balance analysis of pull-in range and oscillatory behavior of third-order type 2 analog PLLs
2020
The most important design parameters of each phase-locked loop (PLL) are the local and global stability properties, and the pull-in range. To extend the pull-in range, engineers often use type 2 PLLs. However, the engineering design relies on approximations which prevent a full exploitation of the benefits of type 2 PLLs. Using an exact mathematical model and relying on a rigorous mathematical thinking this problem is revisited here and the stability and pull-in properties of the third-order type 2 analog PLLs are determined. Both the local and global stability conditions are derived. As a new idea, the harmonic balance method is used to derive the global stability conditions. That approach…
Lasten liikkuminen kylmässä ja kuumassa : lämmönsäätelyn erityispiirteitä
2018
Lapset eroavat paitsi fysiologialtaan, myös käyttäytymiseltään aikuisista. Lasten lämmönsäätelyn erityispiirteet tulee huomioida, jotta he voivat nauttia liikkumisesta, harjoitella ja kilpailla eri lajeissa vaihtelevissa sääolosuhteissa turvallisesti ja toimintakykynsä säilyttäen. nonPeerReviewed
Skill learning during an asynchronous music e-learning module
2023
Learning musical skills is often associated with face-to-face teaching. Few studies on musical skill learning through asynchronous e-learning have been conducted; however, the demand for e-learning has increased due to multiform learning and individual education paths, unrestricted by time and place. This demand is the basis of this research. The focus of this study is Finnish classroom teacher students’ skill learning, learning processes, and learning experiences, while studying music independently through e-learning. The research method is an intensive case study with six students. Their learning diaries were analysed using a data-driven content analysis. Background factors were musical i…
