Within-lake dynamics in the similarity of parasite assemblages of perch (Perca fluviatilis).
2005
Although parasite communities have been studied extensively in recent years, spatial and temporal variation in factors affecting the communities has received less attention. This paper examined the similarity of parasite assemblages of perch (Perca fluviatilis) in 18 locations within a single lake in relation to geographical distance and temporal dynamics in the host and parasite populations. We expected that in the present study-scale where distinct but potentially interacting host subpopulations could occur, similarity of the assemblages could be affected by seasonal dynamics in host movements particularly during the spawning period. Parasite species showed differences in infection levels…

Specific immunotherapy is the only…
Competition for nest-boxes among four vertebrate species: an experimental study in orange groves
1990
The experiment was carried out in eastern Spain from 1986 to 1988. The nest-boxes were placed at the height where natural holes occur, visited twice a week, and cleaned after every breeding season. Four vertebrate species used the nest-boxes: great tit Parus major, house sparrow Passer domesticus, tree sparrow Passer montanus, and black rat Rattus rattus. The first species to occupy the nest-boxes, the great tit, was the least able to defend them. During the third year breeding by the great tit in the nest-boxes decreased markedly, probably due to the increase of house sparrow and black rat occupation. We suggest that differences among species in their ability to discover and use new holes …
Patterns of nestling provisioning by a single‐prey loader bird, Great TitParus major
2009
Capsule Nestling provisioning rates depend on nestling age and number, and on time of season, but not on time of day. Aims To determine patterns of nestling provisioning, the effort made by the parents, and the factors which affect them. Methods Mechanical counters to determine food provisioning patterns in 229 Great Tit Parus major nests over 4 years. Results Feeding frequency per chick showed a linear increase with nestling age and total feeding frequency stabilized towards the end of the nestling period. The number of visits per nest increased linearly, while those per nestling decreased linearly with brood‐size. Feeding rates per nest declined throughout the breeding season parallel to …
Illness perception, mood and coping strategies in allergic rhinitis: are there differences among ARIA classes of severity?
2014
Background: This study was designed to assess if illness perception, mood state and coping strategies differ according to allergic rhinitis (AR) persistence and severity. Methods: Illness perception, mood profiles, coping behaviors and rhinitis symptoms were assessed by means of validated tools inpatients classified according to the Allergic Rhinitis and Its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) guidelines. Results: Two hundred and thirty-one patients underwent data analysis. No difference in age, sex, socio-economic status, smoking habits was detected comparing patients according to AR severity, duration or 4 ARIA classes. Patients with intermittent AR reported higher scores than those with persistent A…
The activity of glutathione S-transferase in hepatopancreas of Procambarus clarkii: Seasonal variations and the influence of environmental pollutants
1991
Abstract 1. 1The glutathione S -transferase activity in hepatopancreas of the American red crayfish Procambarus clarkii after 15 days' acclimatization in tap water aquaria was measured in specimens collected monthly for a whole year, and shows seasonal variation. 2. 2. Previous data on the environmental pollution of Lake Albufera suggest a possible correlation with the activity tested in the different seasons of the year considering the results of non-acclimatized animals.
Seasonal variation of hypolaetin 8-glucoside inSideritis mugronensis borja
1990
A quantitative analysis of the antiinflammatory flavonoid hypolaetin 8-glucoside from Sideritis mugronensis during an annual growth cycle was carried out. After an irregular increase in spring, the maximum levels were reached and maintained in early summer samples.
Is mate fidelity related to site fidelity? A comparative analysis in Ciconiiforms
2000
We tested for an association between divorce rate and site fidelity in 42 avian species belonging to the order Ciconiiforms, using comparative methods that account for the influences of phylogenetic relationships on the data. Our methods enabled us to detect evidence of correlated evolution and provided information on the temporal ordering of evolutionary changes in these two variables. We found a significant correlation between divorce rate and site fidelity, indicating that species with little or no site fidelity are more likely to divorce. Our data suggest that the coupled evolution of divorce and site fidelity can be summarized by three major events. The first event corresponds to a tra…
Toward the definition of a carbon budget model: seasonal variation and temperature effect on respiration rate of vegetative and reproductive organs o…
2009
Summary This study, as a preliminary step toward the definition of a carbon budget model for pistachio trees (Pistacia vera L.), aimed at estimating and evaluating the dynamics of respiration of vegetative and reproductive organs of pistachio tree. Trials were performed in 2005 in a commercial orchard located in Sicily (370 m a.s.l.) on five bearing 20-year-old pistachio trees of cv. Bianca grafted onto Pistachio terebinthus L. Growth analyses and respiration measurements were done on vegetative (leaf) and reproductive (infructescence) organs during the entire growing season (April–September) at biweekly intervals. Results suggested that the respiration rates of pistachio reproductive and v…
The Seasonality Impact of the BTEX Pollution on the Atmosphere of Arad City, Romania
2021
Benzene, toluene, and total BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) concentrations registered for one year (2016) have been determined every month for one high-density traffic area. The assessment was performed in Arad City, Romania, to evaluate these pollutants and their influence on the inhabitants’ health. The contaminants were sampled using a static sampling method and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Benzene was the most dominant among the BTEX compounds—the average concentrations ranged from 18.00 ± 1.32 µg m−3 in December to 2.47 ± 0.74 µg m−3 in August. The average toluene concentration over the year was 4.36 ± 2.42 µg m−3 (with a maximum of 9…
