Improvement of the low energy neutrino factory

The low energy neutrino factory has been proposed as a very sensitive setup for future searches for CP violation and matter effects. Here we study how its performance is affected when the experimental specifications of the setup are varied. Most notably, we have considered the addition of the "platinum'' nu(mu) -> nu(e) channel. We find that, while theoretically the extra channel provides very useful complementary information and helps to lift degeneracies, its practical usefulness is lost when considering realistic background levels. Majorons and supernova cooling

We consider the role of Majoron emission in supernova cooling and its implications for the neutrino mass and lifetime in generic single Majoron models. It is found that, for ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$ with mass $m$, if the lifetime for the decay ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{Majoron}+{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e,\ensuremath{\mu}}$ is shorter than ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}7}$ (m/MeV) sec, then Majorons are so strongly trapped by the inverse process that the resulting Majoron luminosity is small enough not to destabilize the observed ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$ pulse from SN 1987A. Nobelium energy levels and hyperfine structure constants

Advances in laser spectroscopy of superheavy ($Z>100$) elements enabled determination of the nuclear moments of the heaviest nuclei, which requires high-precision atomic calculations of the relevant hyperfine structure (HFS) constants. Here, we calculated the HFS constants and energy levels for a number of nobelium (Z=102) states using the hybrid approach, combining linearized coupled-cluster and configuration interaction methods. We also carried out an extensive study of the No energies using 16-electron configuration interaction method to determine the position of the (5f^{13}7s^2 6d) and (5f^{13}7s^2 7p) levels with a hole in the 5f shell to evaluate their potential effect on the hype…
Laser spectroscopy of the 1001nm ground state transition in dysprosium

We present a direct excitation of the presumably ultranarrow $1001\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{nm}$ ground-state transition in atomic dysprosium. By using resonance ionization spectroscopy with pulsed Ti:sapphire lasers at a hot cavity laser ion source, we were able to measure the isotopic shifts in the $1001\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{nm}$ line between all seven stable isotopes. Furthermore, we determined the upper level energy from the atomic transition frequency of the $^{164}\mathrm{Dy}$ isotope as $9991.004(1)\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and confirm the level energy listed in the NIST database. Hyperfine interaction in the Autler-Townes effect: The formation of bright, dark, and chameleon states

This paper is devoted to clarifying the implications of hyperfine (HF) interaction in the formation of adiabatic (i.e., ``laser-dressed'') states and their expression in the Autler-Townes (AT) spectra. We first use the Morris-Shore model [J. R. Morris and B. W. Shore, Phys. Rev. A 27, 906 (1983)] to illustrate how bright and dark states are formed in a simple reference system where closely spaced energy levels are coupled to a single state with a strong laser field with the respective Rabi frequency ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{S}$. On the importance of background subtraction in the analysis of coronal loops observed with TRACE

In the framework of TRACE coronal observations, we compare the analysis and diagnostics of a loop after subtracting the background with two different and independent methods. The dataset includes sequences of images in the 171 A, 195 A filter bands of TRACE. One background subtraction method consists in taking as background values those obtained from interpolation between concentric strips around the analyzed loop. The other method is a pixel-to-pixel subtraction of the final image when the loop had completely faded out, already used by Reale & Ciaravella 2006. Chiral approach to antikaons- andp-wave interactions in dense nuclear matter

The properties of the antikaons in nuclear matter are investigated from a chiral unitary approach which incorporates the $s$- and $p$-waves of the $\overline{K}N$ interaction. To obtain the in-medium meson-baryon amplitudes we include, in a self-consistent way, Pauli blocking effects, meson self-energies corrected by nuclear short-range correlations and baryon binding potentials. We pay special attention to investigating the validity of the on-shell factorization, showing that it cannot be applied in the evaluation of the in-medium corrections to the $p$-wave amplitudes. Mott insulator: Tenth-order perturbation theory extended to infinite order using a quantum Monte Carlo scheme

We present a method based on the combination of analytical and numerical techniques within the framework of the dynamical mean-field theory. Building upon numerically exact results obtained in an improved quantum Monte Carlo scheme, tenth-order strong-coupling perturbation theory for the Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice is extrapolated to infinite order. We obtain continuous estimates of energy $E$ and double occupancy $D$ with unprecedented precision $\mathcal{O}({10}^{\ensuremath{-}5})$ for the Mott insulator above its stability edge ${U}_{c1}\ensuremath{\approx}4.78$ as well as critical exponents. Observation of Coulomb-Assisted Nuclear Bound State of Ξ−–N14 System

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a Ξ^{-} absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-Λ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as Ξ^{-}+^{14}N→_{Λ}^{10}Be+_{Λ}^{5}He. For the binding energy of the Ξ^{-} hyperon in the Ξ^{-}-^{14}N system a value of 1.27±0.21 MeV was deduced. The energy level of Ξ^{-} is likely a nuclear 1p state which indicates a weak ΞN-ΛΛ coupling.
