Cationic Copolymerization of 3,3-Bis(hydroxymethyl)oxetane and Glycidol: Biocompatible Hyperbranched Polyether Polyols with High Content of Primary H…
2015
The cationic ring-opening copolymerization of 3,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)oxetane (BHMO) with glycidol using different comonomer ratios (BHMO content from 25 to 90%) and BF3OEt2 as an initiator has been studied. Apparent molecular weights of the resulting hyperbranched polyether copolymers ranged from 1400 to 3300 g mol(-1) (PDI: 1.21-1.48; method: SEC, linear PEG standards). Incorporation of both comonomers is evidenced by MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy. All hyperbranched polyether polyols with high content of primary hydroxyl groups portray good solubility in water, which correlates with an increasing content of glycerol units. Detailed NMR characterization was employed to elucidate the copolymer …
pH-Responsive protein nanoparticlesviaconjugation of degradable PEG to the surface of cytochromec
2020
Proteins represent a versatile biopolymer material for the preparation of nanoparticles. For drug delivery applications an acid-triggered disassembly and payload release is preferred. Herein, we present a protein nanoparticle system based on cytochrome c, which is surface-modified with acid-degradable polyethylene glycol (PEGylation). pH-Sensitivity was obtained through vinyl ether moieties distributed in the polyether backbone. When PEGylated, cytochrome c shows a different solubility behaviour in organic solvents, which allows for particle preparation using an emulsion-based solvent evaporation method. The resulting particles are stable under physiological conditions but degrade at acidic…
Influence of Different Environments and Temperatures on the Photo-Oxidation Behaviour of the Polypropylene.
2022
The photo-oxidation of polypropylene at two different temperatures and in three different environments—air, distilled water and sea water—has been followed as a function of the irradiation time. The photo-oxidation kinetic is dramatically dependent on the amount of oxygen available for the oxidation reactions and on the temperature. While the photo-oxidation is very fast in air, the degradation is much slower in the two aqueous media. The degradation in sea water is slightly slower than in distilled water. In all cases, the degradation kinetic increases remarkably with the temperature. This behavior has been attributed to the lower oxygen availability for the oxidation reactions of the poly…
Fluorescent Core/Shell Nanoparticles for Specific Cell‐Nucleus Staining
2008
The highly fluorescent perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxdiimide (PDI) chromophore is a popular dye and pigment because of its excellent chemical, thermal, and photochemical stability. Due to these outstanding properties, there have been several successful applications of PDI chromophores in various fields. Water-soluble and fluorescent PDI dyes have been used in biological applications such as the in vitro staining of cells and proteins. The combination of water solubility and high fluorescence quantum yield still represents a challenging goal since PDI dyes have a strong tendency to form aggregates in aqueous solution even at very low concentrations. Water solubility and high fluorescence quan…
Statistical Analysis of a Method to Predict Drug–Polymer Miscibility
2015
In this study, a method proposed to predict drug-polymer miscibility from differential scanning calorimetry measurements was subjected to statistical analysis. The method is relatively fast and inexpensive and has gained popularity as a result of the increasing interest in the formulation of drugs as amorphous solid dispersions. However, it does not include a standard statistical assessment of the experimental uncertainty by means of a confidence interval. In addition, it applies a routine mathematical operation known as "transformation to linearity," which previously has been shown to be subject to a substantial bias. The statistical analysis performed in this present study revealed that t…
Torsional effects on the molecular polarizabilities of the benzothiazole (A)-benzobisthiazole (B) oligomer A-B13-A
1996
Abstract We outline a method for the calculation of multipole moments and molecular dipole-dipole ( ), dipole-quadrupole ( ), and quadrupole-quadrupole ( ) polarizabilities, which we have successfully applied to benzothiazole (A)-benzobisthiazole (B) oligomer A-B13-A. Three model rotational isomers have been characterized: (1) the fully planar (000) rotational isomer; (2) a conformation with each unit rotated 10° in the alternate direction (+−+), and (3) a rotational isomer with each unit rotated 10° in the same direction (+++). The dipole moment, μ , is smaller for isomers 000 and +−+ than for isomer +++. The calculation of , , and has been performed by use of the interacting induced dipol…
Temperature-controlled poly(propylene) glycol hydrophobicity on the formation of inclusion complexes with modified cyclodextrins. A DSC and ITC study.
2011
The study highlighted the main forces driving the formation of hydroxypropyl-cyclodextrins (HP-CDs) + poly(propylene) glycol 725 g mol(-1) inclusion complexes. The temperature parameter was chosen as the variable to modulate the hydrophobicity of the polymer, and consequently ITC experiments as functions of temperature as well as DSC measurements were done in a systematic way. The polymer is not included into HP-α-CD, it is strongly bound to HP-β-CD and it is floating in HP-γ-CD. The stability of the inclusion complexes is entropy controlled. The gain of the entropy is a unique result compared to the opposite literature findings for inclusion complexes based on polymers and CDs. This peculi…
Peculiar mechanism of solubilization of a sparingly water soluble drug into polymeric micelles. Kinetic and equilibrium studies.
2012
Complementary kinetic and equilibrium studies on the solubilization process of the sparingly water soluble tamoxifen (TAM) drug in polymeric aqueous solutions have been performed by using the spectrophotometric method. In particular, the amphiphilic copolymers obtained by derivatization of polymeric chain of poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide, PHEA, with poly(ethylene glycol)s, PEG (2000 or 5000 Da), and/or hexadecylamine chain, C16, namely PHEA-PEG2000-C16, PHEA-PEG5000-C16, PHEA-C16, have been employed. Preliminary to the kinetic and equilibrium data quantitative treatment, the molar absorption coefficient of TAM in polymeric micelle aqueous solution has been determined. By these studi…
Influence of high power ultrasound on physical-chemical properties of polypropylene films aimed for food packaging: barrier and contact angle features
2017
Investigation was focused on the impact of high power ultrasound (HPUS), also called thermosonication, on the oxygen permeation properties (permeability, solubility and diffusion coefficients) of barrier films aimed for food packaging. For this purpose, biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) coated with acrylic/polyvinylidene chloride (BOPPAcPVDC) and biaxially oriented coextruded polypropylene (BOPPcoex) were used. The physical–chemical profile of the samples was determined using goniometry. There is a significant impact only of extreme HPUS conditions (the longest time and the highest amplitude) on the permeability, solubility and diffusion coefficients of oxygen through the BOPP films. …
Functional and bioactive properties of peptides derived from marine side streams
2021
In fish processing, a great amount of side streams, including skin, bones, heads and viscera, is wasted or downgraded as feed on a daily basis. These side streams are rich sources of bioactive nitrogenous compounds and protein, which can be converted into peptides through enzymatic hydrolysis as well as bacterial fermentation. Peptides are short or long chains of amino acids differing in structure and molecular weight. They can be considered as biologically active as they can contribute to physiological functions in organisms with applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. In the food industry, such bioactive peptides can be used as preservatives or antioxidants to prevent food…
