Separation and determination of alkylglycosides by liquid chromatography with electrospray mass spectrometric detection

2007

The separation of alkylpolyglycosides by liquid chromatography with electrospray mass spectrometric detection, using either an alkylamide or a cyanopropyl column, and acetonitrile/water mixtures as mobile phases, was developed. Using the alkylamide column and isocratic elution, the alpha- and beta-epimers and ring isomers (pyranosides and furanosides) of the alkylmonoglycosides were resolved. The ring isomers were also resolved in a much shorter time using the cyanopropyl column with gradient elution. Using these columns, the isomers of the alkyldiglycosides and alkyltriglycosides were also partially resolved. The equilibration time was much shorter with the cyanopropyl column, which was se…

Surfactant self-assembling in the gas phase: bis(2-ethylhexyl)-sulfosuccinate divalent metal ion anionic aggregates

2012

RATIONALE Investigation of fundamental aspects driving surfactant self-assembling and of the capability of including guest molecules or ions in their micellar aggregates is an exciting research field for theoretical and technological reasons. In this light, assembling and chelating properties of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOTNa) towards divalent metal ion chlorides have been investigated in the gas phase by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry in negative ion mode, tandem mass spectrometry and energy-resolved mass spectrometry. METHODS Water/methanol solutions of AOTNa and chloride salts of nickel, magnesium, calcium and manganese, with different AOTNa/metal salt ratios, w…

Detection and localisation of disulphide bonds in a synthetic peptide reproducing the sequence 1-30 ofPar j1.0101 by electrospray ionisation mass spe…

2001

The structural characterisation of a synthetic peptide reproducingthe sequence 1–30 of Par j 1.0101, a major allergenic protein present in the pollen of Parietaria judaica, by combined use of chemical and enzymatic cleavage, reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), is described. Direct ESI-MS of the synthetic peptide after reaction with methyl iodide showed that the product is a mixture of two peptides: one form in which two out of the four cysteine residues present in the sequence are oxidised and a minor amount of another form in which all the cysteines are fully reduced. It was ascertained, usingthe combined p…

Rapid classification of enzymes in cleaning products by hydrolysis, mass spectrometry and linear discriminant analysis

2008

A method for the rapid classification of proteases, lipases, amylases and cellulases used as enhancers in cleaning products, based on precipitation with acetone, hydrolysis with HCl, dilution of the hydrolysates with ethanol, and direct infusion into the electrospray ion source of an ion-trap mass spectrometer, has been developed. The abundances of the ([M+H]+ ions of the amino acids, from the hydrolysates of both the enzyme industrial concentrates and the detergent bases spiked with them, were used to construct linear discriminant analysis models, capable of distinguishing between the enzyme classes. For this purpose, the variables were normalized as follows: (A) the ion abundance of each …

Infusion mass spectrometry as a fingerprint to characterize varnishes in oil pictorial artworks.

2007

Mass spectrometry methodology to characterize drying oil used as binding media and varnishes in pictorial artworks, prior to conservation or restoration treatment, is proposed. The analytical treatment requires prior basic hydrolysis of the samples to release the fatty acids : caprylic, pelargonic, capric, sebacic, azelaic, suberic, eicosanoic, lauric, mirystic, palmitic, linolenic, linoleic, oleic and stearic, followed by separation from the matrix by a hexane/water extraction. After removing the solvent, the remaining solid is dissolved in potassium hydroxide, propanol and methanol. The mixture is directly infused into a mass spectrometer without any previous derivatization or separation …

Positive and negative electrospray ionization-collision-induced dissociation of sulfur- containing zwitterionic liquids.

2011

The mass spectrometric properties of several (1,2-dimethyl-1 H-imidazol-3-ium-3-yl)-alkane-1-sulfonates (alkane=ethyl, propyl and butyl) are investigated in this study. These substances, named zwitterionic liquids (ZILs), were synthesized using classical transformations and analyzed in positive and negative electrospray ionization mode using collision-induced dissociation (0–50 eV). We have also performed regioselective deuterium labeling of the alkyl chain of 3-(1,2-dimethyl-1 H-imidazol-3-ium-3-yl)-propane-1-sulfonates. Thus, the mass spectra of isotopically-labeled compounds were used for the confirmation of fragmentation pathways of ZILs. Briefly, the data obtained in this study show t…

Encapsulation of secondary and tertiary ammonium salts by resorcinarenes and pyrogallarenes: the effect of size and charge concentration

2015

The binding of different categories of alkyl ammonium (secondary and tertiary mono- and di-ammonium) salts with resorcinarenes and a pyrogallarene through weak interactions was analysed in all phases. 1H NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry were utilized in analysing the complexes in solution and in the gas phase, respectively. The 1H NMR titration studies in methanol-d4 reveal that the association constants for the 1:1 complexes vary according to the electronic properties of the hosts as well as the size, geometric orientation and charge concentration of the guest cations with binding constants of up to 950 M−1 in some cases. Mass spectrometry reveals 1:1 monomeri…

Peptide mapping by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography employing silica rod monoliths.

2003

In this paper, a general procedure is described for the generation of peptide maps of proteins with monolithic silica-based columns. The peptide fragments were obtained by tryptic digestion of various cytochrome c species with purification of the tryptic fragments achieved by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic methods. Peak assignment of the various peptides was based on evaluation of the biophysical properties of the individual peptides and via mass spectrometric identification. The performance of several different monolithic sorbents prepared as columns of identical cross-sectional dimensions were investigated as part of these peptide mapping studies and the data evalu…

The Synergetic Interplay of Weak Interactions in the Ion-Pair Recognition of Quaternary and Diquaternary Ammonium Salts by Halogenated Resorcinarenes

2013

The influence of halogens on the noncovalent interactions of different upper-rim-substituted hexylresorcinarenes with quaternary and diquaternary ammonium iodide salts was investigated in the gas phase by electrospray ionization Fourier-transform ion-cyclotron-resonance (ESI-FTICR) mass spectrometry and in solution by 1H NMR titration studies. The electronic nature of the substituents on the upper rim of the resorcinarene was directly reflected in the order of binding strengths of the hosts towards quaternary and diquaternary ammonium cations in the gas phase. In solution, the opposite trend was observed, with generally higher binding constants for the diquaternary over the quaternary salts…
