Determination of the atmospheric precipitation pH value on the basis of the analysis of lichen cationoactive layer constitution

2006

Studies of equilibria and kinetics of the ion exchange process between the surrounding (water solution) and lichens prove that the number of mobile hydrogen ions bonded in lichens depends on the concentration of hydrogen ions in the precipitation with which the lichens are in contact and the type and concentration of other cations contained in the precipitation. The measurement of these values was suggested; as a result, it enabled to determine the pH of precipitation by determination of mobile cations bonded in exposed or naturally grown lichens. The studies were conducted on Hypogymnia physodes lichens.

Recurrence time distribution and temporal clustering properties of a cellular automaton modelling landslide events

2018

Abstract. Reasonable prediction of landslide occurrences in a given area requires the choice of an appropriate probability distribution of recurrence time intervals. Although landslides are widespread and frequent in many parts of the world, complete databases of landslide occurrences over large periods are missing and often such natural disasters are treated as processes uncorrelated in time and, therefore, Poisson distributed. In this paper, we examine the recurrence time statistics of landslide events simulated by a cellular automaton model that reproduces well the actual frequency-size statistics of landslide catalogues. The complex time series are analysed by varying both the threshold…

Antimicrobial activity of the extracts of Terfezia claveryi and Tirmania pinoyi against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria causal agent of dise…

2017

Tomato diseases caused by virus, bacteria and fungi have been reported worldwide and caused considerable economic losses. Among all diseases, attention is paid to those caused by bacteria. In this study, the extracts of two “desert truffles” Terfezia claveryi and Tirmania pinoyi were tested against six bacterial species, causal agent of economically important tomato diseases: Pseudomonas corrugata, P. mediterranea, P. syringae pv. tomato Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, Xanthomonas vesicatoria and Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganansis. The extracts from both fungal species, evaluated by agar well diffusion method, showed an antimicrobial activity against all the teste…

TLR7 controls VSV replication in CD169(+) SCS macrophages and associated viral neuroinvasion

2019

Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is an insect-transmitted rhabdovirus that is neurovirulent in mice. Upon peripheral VSV infection, CD169+ subcapsular sinus (SCS) macrophages capture VSV in the lymph, support viral replication, and prevent CNS neuroinvasion. To date, the precise mechanisms controlling VSV infection in SCS macrophages remain incompletely understood. Here, we show that Toll-like receptor-7 (TLR7), the main sensing receptor for VSV, is central in controlling lymph-borne VSV infection. Following VSV skin infection, TLR7−/− mice display significantly less VSV titers in the draining lymph nodes (dLN) and viral replication is attenuated in SCS macrophages. In contrast to effects o…

E-oral, a tool to assess oral expression and liste…

Challenges in dental statistics: survey methodology topics

2022

This paper gathers some contributions concerning survey methodology in dental research, as discussed during the first Workshop of the SISMEC STATDENT working group on statistical methods and applications in dentistry, held in Ancona on the 28th September 2011.
The first contribution deals with the European Global Oral Health Indicators Development (EGOHID) Project which proposed a comprehensive and standardized system of epidemiological tools (questionnaires and clinical forms) for national data collection on oral health in Europe. The second contribution regards the design and conduct of trials to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of toothbrushes and mouthrinses. Final…

Risk of Periodontal Disease: Is there a Correlation with the Type of Antihypertensive Medication?

2011

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of long-term oral antihypertensive treatment using centrally acting sympatho-inhibitory drugs (clonidine) and beta-blockers (metoprolol) on capillary microcirculation in the labial and periodontal mucosa.
Methods: Sixty subjects were recruited for the study: 20 patients affected by hypertension in treatment with centrally-acting sympatho-inhibitory drugs (64.28 ± 11.78 years); 20 patients in treatment with beta-blockers (62.03 ± 9.84 years) and 20 healthy subjects (62.06 ± 6.72 years). We use the videocapillaroscopic technique to evaluate in vivo the microcirculation of the labial mucosa corresponding to the lower lip…

TEMPORARY AESTHETIC RECONSTRUCTION OF A FRACTURED FRONT TOOTH DURING ENDODONTIC TREATMENT BY MEANS OF A HALLOW POST MADE IN A DENTAL OFFICE. A CASE S…

2012

A fractured front tooth at gum level triggers significant changes in human physiognomy. If, in addition to this, a chronic apical lesion occurs, the aesthetic treatment is postponed in most cases. This article describes the way in which we managed to temporarily restore the aesthetic aspect of some patients with fractured superior incisors and chronic apical lesions using a hollow post made in the dental office.
