Functional genomic analysis of the response to hypoxic and oxidative stress in Candida albicans

2017

‘My Language! Heavens!’: Strange Tongues and the Denial of Mimesis in The Tempest

2008

2020

[EN] The knowledge of both foreign and mother languages constitutes a core competence in translator and interpreter training, as professional translation cannot exist if this competence has not been previously consolidated. Nevertheless, research regarding the teaching and acquisition of foreign languages within Translation and Interpreting studies is extremely scarce and its practice frequently adheres to general pedagogical models which do not keep to the ultimate goal and main objectives that should lay down the foreground for this type of teaching. On this basis, this article aims to discuss the main literature derived from this field of expertise and offer a reflection on the teaching …

Translation and lexicography: a necessary dialogue

2014

Firstly, the fields of Translation and Lexicography are compared and their similarities and differences are brought to the fore. Later, a review of the (slightly scarce) literature on the topic shows that most of the work has focused on how translators use dictionaries, how useful they are, and which kinds of dictionaries are preferred, among other similar issues. It is highlighted that lexicographers show little interest in the field of translation, at least as a source for dictionary building. A few potential avenues of research are defined, which could be beneficial for translators and lexicographers alike.

2013

This article deals critically and succinctly with the development of the studies on translation history in Spain, starting from counting the bibliographic production (researches, studies, articles, publications, etc.). Given the existing thematic dispersion and the increase that these studies have experienced in the last few decades, this historiographical review highlights the need for a synthesis in future works establishing periods and classification in order to provide a panoramic and practical view to research and theorizing.

Introduction. The wheres, whats and whys of transcreation

2018

As the Translation Studies community advances in an increasingly networked globe and the new market needs change, the range of interests of translation as a discipline broadens, new proposals are put forward by the market stakeholders and new challenges are discussed in academia. Since the conventional model of one-on-one agency and client is being replaced by a vast global network of translators, new modes of translation, such as fansubbing, fandubbing, crowdsourcing and transcreation, have challenged the traditional structure of the translation market and ethics of the discipline. Against this backdrop, a debate has emerged around translation and transcreation (see Cultus 2014), mostly in…

Homeostasis in the Central Dogma of molecular biology: the importance of mRNA instability

2019

Cell survival requires the control of biomolecule concentration, i.e. biomolecules should approach homeostasis. With information-carrying macromolecules, the particular concentration variation ranges depend on each type: DNA is not buffered, but mRNA and protein concentrations are homeostatically controlled, which leads to the ribostasis and proteostasis concepts. In recent years, we have studied the particular features of mRNA ribostasis and proteostasis in the model organism S. cerevisiae. Here we extend this study by comparing published data from three other model organisms: E. coli, S. pombe and cultured human cells. We describe how mRNA ribostasis is less strict than proteostasis. A co…

Wole Soyinka: Due Poesie

2008

Humour as a symptom of research trends in translation studies

2017

This article is an overview of translation studies applied to the case of humour, divided into four parts, plus an extensive bibliography. The first part goes over humour translation as a relevant object of research and why it is worthy of more academic attention. Humour translation should not be dealt with or looked upon as a strange body within translation studies. Part two is an overview of key contributions to the field, from Spain and elsewhere, covering a considerable number of authors and theories. Part three focuses on promising areas of interest for researchers and illustrates how audiovisual translation is a good instance of dynamism within the field, connecting all this to the ri…
