Female knowledge workers and the illusion of working-time autonomy

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to ask: what are the temporal realities of female knowledge workers? It especially focusses on women’s possibilities of using working-time autonomy, and the work and non-work practices that shape their possibility to use work-hour autonomy. In knowledge work, working-time autonomy is usually high, but exercising autonomy is not always possible. The study was carried out in Finland, where full-time work is common also among women, even if they have small children. University-wide, top-down curriculum reform at a Finnish university: perceptions of the academic staff

This study examines academic staff’s perceptions of a university-wide, top-down curriculum reform in terms of the management of the reform, the support provided by the university’s administration, and the utilisation of the university’s guidelines. Differences between faculties are also scrutinised. The study was conducted at a multidisciplinary public research university in Finland using the survey method. The data (n = 394) consisted of academic staff’s responses to multiple-choice and open-ended questions. The aim of this study is to respond to the educational needs of the future, considering automation and robotics. It is inevitable that automation and robotics are changing our lives and they create challenges for the future work life and education. In this study, we investigate what is the educational background of the unemployed people who are in danger of being replaced by automation and what is their educational resilience for adapting work life changes. The data of this study consist of the latest PIAAC data (The Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies). This dissertation investigates expatriate IT workers located in Japan in the contexts of their acculturation and thinking about workplace and business negotiations. Case studies of individual actors supported by surveys were chosen as the methods to gather data leading to findings about how expatriates develop in Japan, including their ability to adjust, accept, and reject schemata about business management situations.
