Comprehensive school reform and labor market outcomes over the lifecycle: Evidence from Finland

This study focused on the labor market effects of the Finnish comprehensive school reform in 1972–1977 over the lifecycle. The reform increased the age at which students are separated into vocational and general tracks from 11 to 16 as well as updated the curriculum to include more general content instead of vocational. Using longitudinal administrative register data and exploiting the gradual implementation of the reform, I found a negative effect on employment in early career and a positive effect later in the lifecycle. Suomessa 1990-luvun työllisyyskriisi nosti työajan lyhentämisen ja työn jakamisen vilkkaan keskustelun kohteeksi. This article considers the impact of active labor market policy on the employment rate. It reviews the literature on wage subsidies, training and job search assistance. Particular attention is paid on the side effects of active labor market policies such as the lock-in effect, substitution effect and displacement effect. Recent research concerning the implementation of active labor market policies is also reviewed. The evaluation studies show that private sector wage subsidies have positive employment effects both in the short and long runs. This chapter summarizes the evidence on the indirect costs of obesity that result from adverse labour market outcomes (i.e., earnings and employment losses) at the individual level. We focus on empirical evidence covering European countries emphasizing the most recent studies in this field. Research has established three key empirical observations. The first fact is that there is a negative link between excess weight and various labour market outcomes.
