Cocaine addiction and personality: a mathematical model.
2010
The existence of a close relation between personality and drug consumption is recognized, but the corresponding causal connection is not well known. Neither is it well known whether personality exercises an influence predominantly at the beginning and development of addiction, nor whether drug consumption produces changes in personality. This paper presents a dynamic mathematical model of personality and addiction based on the unique personality trait theory (UPTT) and the general modelling methodology. This model attempts to integrate personality, the acute effect of drugs, and addiction. The UPTT states the existence of a unique trait of personality called extraversion, understood as a di…
Bayesian hierarchical models in manufacturing bulk service queues
2006
In this paper, Queueing Theory and Bayesian statistical tools are used to analyze the congestion of various manufacturing bulk service queues with the same characteristics that are working independently of one another and in equilibrium. Hierarchical models are discussed in order to develop the whole inferential process for the parameters governing the system. Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods and numerical inversion of transforms are addressed to compute the posterior predictive distributions of the usual measures of performance in practice.
A deep insight into the mechanism of the acid-catalyzed rearrangement of the Z-phenylhydrazone of 5-amino-3-benzoyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole in a non-polar s…
2010
The conversion of the Z-phenylhydrazone of 5-amino-3-benzoyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole (1a) into the relevant 1,2,3-triazole (2a) has been quantitatively studied in toluene in the presence of several halogenoacetic acids (HAAs, 3a–h). Again, the occurrence of two reaction pathways has been pointed out: they require one or two moles of acid, respectively, thus repeating the situation previously observed in the presence of trichloroacetic acid. The observed rate constant ratios (kIII/kII) are only slightly affected by the nature of the acid used. To gain a deeper insight into the action of the acids used we have measured the association constants of the HAAs (3a–h) with 4-nitroaniline (4) in toluene. …
Zur Stereochemie der Oxidation chiraler, tertiärer Phosphine mit Dimethylsulfoxid
1976
The Sterochemistry of the Oxidation of Chiral Tertiary Phosphines by Means of Dimethyl Sulfoxide The steric course o…
The in, out Asymmetric Pseudo-Triple Helical Form of a D3h Diaza-Macropentacycle
2007
A sterically encumbered [N(2)S(6)] macropentacycle (5) related to diazamacrobicycles and cryptands has been synthesized in 53% yield by the [1+1] condensation reaction between functionalized macrocyclic and macrotricyclic precursors. A macrononacycle (18) resulting from the corresponding [2+2] condensation was isolated in 7% yield from the reaction mixture. Both compounds showed broad features in their room-temperature (1)H NMR spectra, but their maximal average symmetry (D(3h) and D(2h), respectively) was achieved at high temperature (380 K). At low temperature (200 K, CD(2)Cl(2) solution), the macropentacycle is "frozen" to a single asymmetric (C1) conformation on the (1)H NMR time scale,…

A methodology for optimisation of solar dish-Stirling systems size, based on the local frequency distribution of direct normal irradiance
2021
Abstract In geographical areas where direct solar irradiation levels are relatively high, concentrated solar energy systems are one of the most promising green energy technologies. Dish-Stirling systems are those that achieve the highest levels of solar-to-electric conversion efficiency, and yet they are still among the least common commercially available technologies. This paper focuses on a strategy aimed at promoting greater diffusion of dish-Stirling systems, which involves optimizing the size of the collector aperture area based on the hourly frequency distributions of beam irradiance and defining a new incentive scheme with a feed-in tariff that is variable with the installed costs of…
Dall'inversione alle trasformazioni quadratiche
2012
Revisiting the Trade-off Between Risk and Incentives: The Shocking Effect of Random Shocks?
2019
Despite its central role in the theory of incentives, empirical evidence of a trade-off between risk and incentives remains scarce. We reexamine this trade-off in a workplace lab environment and find that, in line with theory, principals increase fixed pay while lowering performance pay when the relationship between effort and output is noisier. Unexpectedly, agents produce substantially more in the noisy environment than in the baseline despite weaker incentives. In addition, principals’ earnings are significantly higher in the noisy environment. We show that these findings can be accounted for when agents maximize a non-CARA utility function or when they exhibit loss aversion. Data and t…
Seismic moment tensors and regional stress in the area of the December 2013–January 2014, Matese earthquake sequence (Italy)
2014
Abstract The main goal of this study is to provide moment tensor solutions for small and moderate earthquakes of the Matese seismic sequence in southern Italy for the period of December 2013–January 2014. We estimate the focal mechanisms of 31 earthquakes with local magnitudes related to the Matese earthquake seismic sequence (December 2013–January 2014) in Southern-Central Italy which are recorded by the broadband stations of the Italian National Seismic Network and the Mediterranean Very Broadband Seismographic Network (MedNet) run by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). The solutions show that normal faulting is the prevailing style of seismic deformation in agreeme…
