Usability issues of clinical and research applications of virtual reality in older people: A systematic review

2020

Aging is a condition that may be characterized by a decline in physical, sensory, and mental capacities, while increased morbidity and multimorbidity may be associated with disability. A wide range of clinical conditions (e.g., frailty, mild cognitive impairment, metabolic syndrome) and age-related diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, cancer, sarcopenia, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases) affect older people. Virtual reality (VR) is a novel and promising tool for assessment and rehabilitation in older people. Usability is a crucial factor that must be considered when designing virtual systems for medicine. We conducted a systematic review with Preferred Reporting Items…

Alesa Arconidea (Tusa): proposta ricostruttiva dell’agora tardo ellenistica

2022

In the second half of the second century BC, in the wake of the building renovation that affected the most important urban centers of northern Sicily, even the ancient city of Alesa Arconidea remodeled its monumental structure. The agora/forum, in particular, was restructured in a scenographic system, acquiring the architectural characteristics of a typical Hellenistic monumental complex, similar to those of Greece and Asia Minor, by which it was influenced. In planimetric terms, to date up to the present time, the agora represents a unicum in Sicily because of its Π shape with deep double columns of the arcade, which enclose a large square excluded to vehicular traffic. Recent researches a…

The role of virtual work in Levi-Civita's parallel transport

2015

The current literature on history of science reports that Levi-Civita’s parallel transport was motivated by his attempt to provide the covariant derivative of the absolute differential calculus with a geometrical interpretation (For instance, see Scholz in The intersection of history and mathematics, Birkhauser, Basel, pp 203–230, 1994, Sect. 4). Levi-Civita’s memoir on the subject was explicitly aimed at simplifying the geometrical computation of the curvature of a Riemannian manifold. In the present paper, we wish to point out the possible role implicitly played by the principle of virtual work in Levi-Civita’s conceptual reasoning to formulate parallel transport.

Ten Words About Morphogenetic Images

2018

This chapter describes how the repertoire of images derived from morphogenetic shaping processes is widely studied in every scientific and humanistic field. These are from the pioneering experiences of cinematic, programmed and generative arts of the 1960s and 1970s, the utopian digital space spells in the ‘90s, the morphogenetic architectural projects in the early 2000s, to the latest experiences. It is possible to look at these currents with a critical look detached from the time distance that has developed. Many denominations indicate processes and experiences in different fields but result from a common intellectual matrix. This is used to generate shapes, figures, spaces or images from…

Synthesis and biological activities of a new class of heat shock protein 90 inhibitors, designed by energy-based pharmacophore virtual screening

2013

The design through energy-based pharmacophore virtual screening has led to aminocyanopyridine derivatives as efficacious new inhibitors of Hsp90. The synthesized compounds showed a good affinity for the Hsp90 ATP binding site in the competitive binding assay. Moreover, they showed an excellent antiproliferative activity against a large number of human tumor cell lines. Further biological studies on the derivative with the higher EC50 confirmed its specific influence on the cellular pathways involving Hsp90.

Development of a test station for accurate in situ I-V curve measurements of photovoltaic modules in Southern Norway

2011

The development of an outdoor test station for accurate in situ I-V curve measurements of photovoltaic (PV) modules is described. The modules are installed in an open-rack configuration at the University of Agder in Southern Norway. Seven new and three aged PV modules of different type and make are being tested, including mono-and multicrystalline silicon from differing manufacturing routes, triple-junction amorphous silicon, and CIS. Data acquisition is controlled with a multichannel electronic load system and LabVIEW software, recording high-resolution I-V curves at one-minute intervals. Between I-V curve sweeps, each module is operated at the maximum power point. Characteristic electrica…

I modelli digitali come strumento per lo studio dell'architettura antica: l'anastilosi virtuale

2017

The contribution concerns the methodology for the reconstructive study of ancient monuments with particular reference to the concept of Virtual Anastylosis. This contribution illustrates the work carried out within the project of the exhibition "Living in Selinunte, from the origins to the Middle Ages", with particular reference to the virtual reconstruction of the North Gate and the FF1 block.

Ipotesi di ricostruzione virtuale della piazza maggiore a Noto Antica

2019

Today ancient Noto is a medieval archaeological site, yet to be discovered. After the 1693 earthquake, the ancient city of Noto, in the middle of the Baroque period, was rebuilt in another place and the ancient city was abandoned. The first excavation campaign in ancient Noto by Paolo Orsi dates back to the period between 1894 and 1896. In the following years there will be other excavation campaigns, in which other architectural and sculptural relics will be found. They are today part of the collection of the Civic Museum. The contribution focuses on the study of the piazza Maggiore (Main Square) site, the center of the ancient city and on the surrounding buildings. After analyzing the limi…

Generalized power-angle control for grid-forming converters: A structural analysis

2022

Several control schemes have been recently proposed and studied as grid-forming controls for power converters. In all these schemes, the power-angle control loop is the part which defines the fundamental capabilities of the grid-forming control: that control loop governs in fact the inherent synchronization mechanism of the power converter, the power sharing with the other generation sources in the system and the oscillatory characteristics of the converter-based resource. This article introduces a general formulation for the power-angle control characterizing the grid-forming concept for power converters. The generalized power-angle control is based on a polynomial fraction formulation, an…
