COVARIANCE AND CORRELATION ESTIMATORS IN BIPARTITE SYSTEMS

We present a weighted estimator of the covariance and correlation in bipartite complex systems with a double layer of heterogeneity. The advantage provided by the weighted estimators lies in the fact that the unweighted sample covariance and correlation can be shown to possess a bias. Indeed, such a bias affects real bipartite systems, and, for example, we report its effects on two empirical systems, one social and the other biological. On the contrary, our newly proposed weighted estimators remove the bias and are better suited to describe such systems.

Reaggregation and binding of cell wall proteins from Candida albicans to structural polysaccharides

Urea or hot sodium dodecyl sulphate extracted a significant amount of the same proteins from the matrix of the cell wall of the yeast form and mycelial cells of Candida albicans. Gel filtration analysis of the urea-extracted proteins revealed that they occurred in the form of large complexes which were unaffected by up to 8 M urea. Among them, proteins en route to becoming covalently associated within the wall scaffold were identified by their reaction with specific antibodies. Characterization of a disulphide-bound Pir-cell wall protein (Pir-CWP) ofYarrowia lipolytica

In this work we have studied the disulphide-bound group of cell wall mannoproteins of Yarrowia lipolytica and Candida albicans. In the case of Y. lipolytica, SDS-PAGE analysis of the beta-mercaptoethanol-extracted material from the purified cell walls of the yeast form, showed the presence of a main polypeptide of 45 kDa and some minor bands in the 100-200 kDa range. This chapter investigates the motivational drivers of customer brand engagement in social media and examines the nature of the relationships between these drivers and engagement, as well as the relationships between brand engagement and share-of-wallet. In addition, we tested the moderating effect of the frequency of social media visits on the relationship between engagement and share-of-wallet. In the present work results on the degradation phenomena of stone materials in the Ancient Theatre of Taormina, one of the most important Greek–Roman monuments of Sicily, are reported. Artificial stone materials in different conservation conditions were investigated. Samples of salt efflorescences from brick walls and degraded setting mortars were taken from the open gallery in “summa cavea”. The results are given of textural and compositional investigations carried out on carbonate materials outcropping in various localities in northwestern Sicily where fluorite, barite and calcite mineralizations of hydrothermal origin occur. Observation of the textural features indicate variations in the degree of calcite recrystallization and silicification that appear to be more marked in rocks that show more evident effects of mineralization.
