Being the Family Caregiver of a Patient With Dementia During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Lockdown

Background: Family caregivers of patients with dementia are at high risk of stress and burden, and quarantine due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have increased the risk of psychological disturbances in this population. The current study was carried out during the national lockdown declared in March 2020 by the Italian government as a containment measure of the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic and is the first nationwide survey on the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on the mental health of dementia informal caregivers. Methods: Eighty-seven dementia centers evenly distributed on the Italian territory enrolled 4,710 caregiver–patient pairs. The "Honeymoon Phase" in Children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM): Frequency, Duration and Predictive Factors at Onset

Abstract: Aim of thè study was: to analyze thè epidemiological features of paediatric T1DM at onset and their relation to remission frequency and duration in thè first year of disease, to assess clinical effìcacy of Glucose Evaluation Trial REMission (GETREM) protocol in terms of induction and maintenance of thè "honeymoon phase" and to evaluate Insulin Dose-Adjusted A1C values at onset [IDAA1C = HbAlc% + (Insulin U/Kg/die x 4)] as a predictor of remission. 181 patients less than 15 years of age were admitted at our Department for T1DM onset and were treated according to GETREM protocol in thè years 2008-2011. Morbidly adherent placenta: evaluation of ultrasound diagnostic criteria and differentiation of placenta accreta from percreta

Objectives To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of two-dimensional (2D) gray-scale and color Doppler and three-dimensional (3D) power Doppler sonographic criteria for morbidly adherent placenta (MAP), and to identify criteria to help distinguish placenta accreta from placenta percreta. Methods We enrolled 187 patients with placenta previa and history of uterine surgery and performed transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound examination for early detection of MAP. With 2D gray-scale transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasonography, we investigated loss/irregularity of the echolucent area between the uterus and the placenta (‘clear space’), thinning or interruption of the hyperechoic interface…

Rilevazione nazionale in tema di formazione specifica di medicina generale in Italia

Physicians have to get a “specific” diploma attending a threeyear training course provided by each regional health service in order to practice as General Practitioners in Italy. In the last years, there has been an ongoing debate about the need to evolve the specific regional courses into integrated specialization training courses, organized and managed by universities with the contribution of regional health services. The Italian Junior Doctors Association and the Giotto Movement carried out a national survey with the aim to identify strengths and weaknesses of the specific regional training courses. Three-hundred-two junior General Practitioners in training (61,2% females) answered to a …

Euromediterranean Biomedical Journal: the renewed journal of young doctors aims even higher.

In January 2006, a new journal, Capsula Eburnea, was born in the Italian scientific pub-lishing scene, with the initial goal of creating, at the same time, “an open scientific forum and a blog”. Until December 2009, the vast majority of manuscripts was still published in Italian, restricting the number of readers. From the end of 2009, the journal has undergone extensive changes, becoming indexed in the main scientific search engines (Scopus, Directory of Open Access Journal, Google Scholar, Ulrich Periodical Directory), and renewing its Editorial Team with a role reassign-ment and expanding the Editorial Board to up to 40 young doctors with proven scientific experience from 15 countries ar…

The Italian dementia with Lewy bodies study group (DLB-SINdem): toward a standardization of clinical procedures and multicenter cohort studies design

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) causes elevated outlays for the National Health Systems due to high institutionalization rate and patients' reduced quality of life and high mortality. Furthermore, DLB is often misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's disease. These data motivate harmonized multicenter longitudinal cohort studies to improve clinical management and therapy monitoring. The Italian DLB study group of the Italian Neurological Society for dementia (SINdem) developed and emailed a semi-structured questionnaire to 572 national dementia centers (from primary to tertiary) to prepare an Italian large longitudinal cohort. The questionnaire surveyed: (1) prevalence and incidence of DLB; (2) clinical…
