Changes in the Spectral Characteristics of Ventricular Fibrillation in Lesions Produced by Radiofrequency Ablation. An Experimental Study

2008

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Although electro- physiological databases contain information about changes in the time domain in lesions produced by radiofrequency ablation, very few data on changes in the frequency domain are available. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the spectral characteristics of ventricular fibrillation in zones with radiofrequency lesions. METHODS Recordings of ventricular fibrillation were obtained in 11 isolated perfused rabbit heart preparations using a multiple epicardial electrode located on the left ventricular free wall. Spectral parameters derived by Fourier analysis before and after the creation of transmural radiofrequency lesions were compa…

Functional, biochemical and morphological studies on human bronchi after cryopreservation

1995

1. Human isolated bronchi have been investigated as fresh tissue or after storage (7 and 30 days) at -196 degrees C in foetal calf serum containing 1.8 M dimethyl sulphoxide. 2. After cryopreservation, the maximal contractile response to acetylcholine (3 mM) was reduced (approximately 25%) but the difference did not reach significance statistically. Maximal responses to other spasmogens tested (histamine, [Nle10]NKA(4-10), bradykinin, leukotriene D4, U46619, and KCl) did not differ between unfrozen and frozen/thawed tissues. The sensitivity of cryopreserved tissues to the constrictor agents tested was similar to that of fresh tissues. 3. The accumulation of inositol phosphates produced by a…

Potential role of heme oxygenase-1 in the progression of rat adjuvant arthritis

2004

Rat adjuvant arthritis is an experimental model widely used to evaluate etiopathogenetic mechanisms in chronic inflammation. We have examined the participation of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in this experimental arthritis. In this study, an increased nitric oxide (NO) production in the paw preceded the upregulation of HO-1, whereas selective inhibition of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) after the onset of arthritis decreased HO-1 expression, suggesting that the induction of this enzyme may depend on NO produced by iNOS. Therapeutic administration of the HO-1 inhibitor tin protoporphyrin IX was able to control the symptoms of arthritis. This agent significantly decreased leukocyte infiltration, hyp…

Beneficial Effect of Shikonin on Experimental Colitis Induced by Dextran Sulfate Sodium in Balb/C Mice

2012

[EN] The naphthoquinone shikonin, a major component of the root of Lithospermum erythrorhizon, now is studied as an anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). Acute UC was induced in Balb/C mice by oral administration of 5% dextran sodium sulfate (DSS). The disease activity index was evaluated, and a histologic study was carried out. Orally administered shikonin reduces induced UC in a dose-dependent manner, preventing the shortening of the colorectum and decreasing weight loss by 5% while improving the appearance of feces and preventing bloody stools. The disease activity index score was much lower in shikonin-treated mice than in the colitic group, as well as the…
