Varying plant protein sources in the diet of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax differently affects lipid metabolism and deposition

The liver activity of lipogenic enzymes, the lipid content in various tissues, and plasma lipid levels of major, were measured in sea bass (D. labrax) fed over 96 days either a, fish meal-based control diet or preparations where 70% of fish meal protein was replaced by wheat gluten singly or in combination with pea or soybean meals. Relative to the controls, sea bass fed the wheat gluten-based diet resulted in stimulated lipogenesis in liver and increased lipid deposition in muscle. The opposite occurred when a substantial amount of soybean meal was included in the diet. The role of dietary protein source on growth performance and lipid metabolism in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was investigated, by the evaluation of fat content in different tissues, plasma metabolites, liver lipogenic activity and fatty acid composition of dorsal muscle tissue.Five isonitrogenous (490gkg-1crude protein dry-matter basis) and isolipidic (170gkg-1lipid dry-matter basis) diets with graded levels of wheat gluten, soybean and pea meal in substitution of fish meal were evaluated in European sea bass (initial body weight 23.9±0.1) for 96days. Levels of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and metals in European sea bass from fish farms in Italy

The study evaluated the levels of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and metals in the fillet of medium (468 ± 92 g) and large (708 ± 135 g) European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) from 11 Italian fish farms using different rearing systems. DL-PCB contamination was higher in fish grown in extensive coastal lagoons compared with intensive inland basins and intensive sea cages (28.5 vs. 9.13 and 13.1 pg Toxic Equivalents (TEQ)/g fat; P < 0.001). Partial substitution of fish meal with vegetable protein sources in a diet for sea bass: effects on lipogenesis

Three isoproteic (49.4%) and isolipidic (17.0%) diets were prepared: A control diet FM, in which protein was derived from fish meal and two experimental diets in which 70% of the fish meal protein was substituted with wheat gluten meal (WGM) or wheat gluten meal plus soybean meal (WGMsb), respectively. The essential limiting amino acids were added to satisfy the requirements of the species (Tibaldi et al., 1996).
