Power quality effects on the measurement of reactive power in three-phase power systems in the light of the IEEE Standard 1459–2000.

2007

Reactive power is a very important quantity in electric power systems since it affects the efficiency of these systems. Also, capacitive loads can produce over-voltages in electric transformers by Ferranti effect, which produces bad power quality, so it is necessary to measure the reactive power correctly. In this paper reactive phenomena in three-phase power systems with unbalanced voltages are expressed and measured in the light of the IEEE Std 1459-2000. For analyzing the reactive phenomena the positive-sequence fundamental frequency instantaneous reactive power is used. By comparing the expressions of this instantaneous power in three-phase systems with unbalanced voltages with those co…

Experimental study of the evolution of a bar breakage process in a commercial induction machine

2008

This paper analyzes the results of a destructive test developed on a commercial induction motor. The test is designed to reproduce in the laboratory the cage degradation process of an induction motor subjected to a high amount of working cycles, which include heavy startups. During each cycle, the main magnitudes related to the motor condition monitoring are registered, at steady state as well as at transient regime. From these magnitudes, some fault indicators described in the literature are calculated, and so, it is possible to follow their evolution. This analysis assesses the use of such small commercial machines in a test bed as a way of developing a failure that can be used to compare…

Phasor total unbalance power: Formulation and some properties

2007

Unbalance power has been used to quantify unbalance phenomenon effects in the electric power systems for a long time. Expressions of this power developed by some different theories only give the value of its module. Therefore, total unbalance power values in electric power systems cannot be obtained by the unbalance power values of each of their loads. For that, it is necessary to express the unbalance power as a complex number. In this paper the unbalance power is expressed in phasor notation and some of their properties are described, applied to electric systems with balanced voltages. Results are verified by simulation and also practical comparative experiences are realized in actual ins…

An Analytical Comparison between DWT and Hilbert-Huang-Based Methods for the Diagnosis of Rotor Asymmetries in Induction Machines

2007

In the paper two alternative tools are applied and compared in order to diagnose the presence of rotor asymmetries in induction machines. Both tools are applied to the stator startup current. The objective is to extract the evolution during the startup transient of the left sideband harmonic associated with the asymmetry, which constitutes a reliable evidence of the presence of the fault. The first tool is the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and its validity for the diagnosis was proven by the authors in previous works, even in cases where the classical Fourier approach does not lead to correct results. Despite its good results, some constraints remained, such as the selection of an optima…

The Use of the Wavelet Approximation Signal as a Tool for the Diagnosis of Rotor Bar Failures

2005

[EN] The aim of this paper is to present a new approach for rotor bar failure diagnosis in induction machines. The method focuses on the study of an approximation signal resulting from the wavelet decomposition of the startup stator current. The presence of the left sideband harmonic is used as evidence of the rotor failure in most diagnosis methods based on the analysis of the stator current. Thus, a detailed description of the evolution of the left sideband harmonic during the startup transient is given in this paper; for this purpose, a method for calculating the evolution of the left sideband during the startup is developed, and its results are physically explained. This paper also show…
