A computer-assisted experiment to study the influence of the point spread function in the image formation process

[EN] We present a new open experimental setup assisted with LabView to be used to teach the concept of the point spread function (PSF). The PSF describes the response of an image-forming system to a point object. The PSF concept is of fundamental importance in optics since the output of an image-forming system can be simulated as the convolution of the PSF with the input object. Influence of different types of astigmatism on visual acuity

[EN] Purpose To investigate the change in visual acuity (VA) produced by different types of astigmatism (on the basis of the refractive power and position of the principal meridians) on normal accommodating eyes. Methods The lens induced method was employed to simulate a set of 28 astigmatic blur conditions on different healthy emmetropic eyes. Additionally, 24 values of spherical defocus were also simulated on the same eyes for comparison. Self-similar focusing with generalized devil's lenses

[EN] We introduce the generalized devil's lenses (GDLs) as a new family of diffractive kinoform lenses whose structure is based on the generalized Cantor set. The focusing properties of different members of this family are analyzed. It is shown that under plane wave illumination the GDLs give a single main focus surrounded by many subsidiary foci. It is shown that the total number of subsidiary foci is higher than the number of foci corresponding to conventional devil's lenses; however, the self-similar behavior of the axial irradiance is preserved to some extent. Imaging quality of multifocal intraocular lenses: automated assessment setup

[EN] Purpose: A new technique for the assessment of the optical quality of multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOLs) under monochromatic and polychromatic illumination is presented. Methods: The system provides, in a totally automated procedure, the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the lens under test for different axial positions of the object. Twin axial vortices generated by Fibonacci lenses.

2013

Optical vortex beams, generated by Diffractive Optical Elements (DOEs), are capable of creating optical traps and other multifunctional micromanipulators for very specific tasks in the microscopic scale. Using the Fibonacci sequence, we have discovered a new family of DOEs that inherently behave as bifocal vortex lenses, and where the ratio of the two focal distances approaches the golden mean. The disctintive optical properties of these Fibonacci vortex lenses are experimentally demonstrated. We believe that the versatility and potential scalability of these lenses may allow for new applications in micro and nanophotonics.

Diffractive corneal inlay for presbyopia

[EN] A conceptually new type of corneal inlays for a customized treatment of presbyopia is presented. The diffractive inlay consists on a small aperture disc having an array of micro-holes distributed inside the open zones of a Fresnel zone plate. In this way, the central hole of the disc lets pass the zero order diffraction and produces an extension of the depth of far focus of the eye, while the diffracted light through the holes in the periphery produce the near focus. Additionally, the micro-holes in the inlay surface fulfill the essential requirement of allowing the flow of nutrients through it to the cells of the corneal stroma. Aperiodic Diffract: Study of diffraction gratings

In this work we introduce a virtual laboratory, APERIODIC DIFFRACT, developed in Matlab GUI (Graphical User Interface) as an informatics tool for teaching the diffractive properties of aperiodic gratings. Volumetric multiple optical traps produced by Devil's lenses

2010

We propose the use of a new diffractive optical element coined Devil's Vortex-Lens (DVL) to produce optical tweezers. In its more general form it results as the combination of a Devil’s lens and a helical vortex phase mask. It is shown that under monochromatic illumination a DVL generates a focal volume with several concatenated doughnut modes that are axially distributed according to the self-similarity of the lens. The orbital angular momentum associated to each link in the chain is investigated.

Corneal and Refractive Astigmatism in Adults: A Power Vectors Analysis

Purpose. In this article, we examine the relationship between corneal and refractive astigmatism (including with the rule, against-the-rule, and oblique astigmatism) in an adult population using power vectors. Methods. Refractive and keratometric measures of astigmatism were conducted on right eyes of 105 white subjects aged 18 to 59 years. We performed a linear regression of refractive astigmatic error on corneal astigmatism, using the J0 and J45 components of the astigmatism. Results. [EN] Purpose: To introduce a new application (ClinicCSF) to measure Contrast Sensitivity Function (CSF) with tablet devices, and to compare it against the Functional Acuity Contrast Test (FACT). Methods: A total of 42 subjects were arranged in two groups of 21 individuals. Different versions of the ClinicCSF (.v1 and .v2) were used to measure the CSF of each group with the same iPad and the results were compared with those measured with the FACT. The agreements between ClinicCSF and FACT for spatial frequencies of 3, 6, 12 and 18 cycles per degree (cpd) were represented by Bland---Altman plots. Comparison of two different devices to assess intraocular lenses

[EN] In this paper, we have compared the performance of two commercial systems, Kaleo-I and IOLA Plus, in the characterization of monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) according to the International Standard requirements (ISO 11979-2). The dioptric power (DP) and the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) at 100.1p/mm and 3.0 mm aperture have been measured with both instruments in twenty commercial monofocal HEMA IOLs and their agreement was assessed by Bland Altman analysis. Through-focus response of multifocal intraocular lenses evaluated with a spatial light modulator

A new testing technique based on the use of a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) is proposed to analyze the optical quality of multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOLs). Different vergences and decentrations of the incident beam can be programmed onto the SLM in order to record the point spread function (PSF) for different object positions. From these axial PSFs, the through-focus modulation transfer function is computed. Because there are no moving parts in the experimental setup, this method is fast and versatile to assess MIOLs. Experimental results confirm the potential of the proposed method.

This work presents a new virtual laboratory, OPHTALMIC, developed with MATLAB GUI for using in Optics and Optometry courses as a computer tool for studying the focusing properties of multifocal diffractive both on unconventional structures both periodic and aperiodic. This virtual laboratory enables students to quickly and easily analyze the influence of the different parameters of construction and find the best solution for a user.

Fractal-structured multifocal intraocular lens

[EN] In this work, we present a new concept of IOL design inspired by the demonstrated properties of reduced chromatic aberration and extended depth of focus of Fractal zone plates. A detailed description of a proof of concept IOL is provided. The result was numerically characterized, and fabricated by lathe turning. The prototype was tested in vitro using dedicated optical system and software.
