The article aims to answer two questions: how the language instruction framework was inscribed into the 2017/2018 Polish language curriculum and what image of the linguistic and communicative competence results from this document. The research method is based on the assumption that these two questions can be answered by analysing the cognitive operators used in the description of specific requirements. The article’s theme concerns challenges encountered in the 21st century in the course of language communicative education within the scope of Polish as a native language. The article discusses didactic approaches to teaching grammar that have been developed in Polish language didactics since the end of the 18th century: grammatical-normative, system-grammatical and functional. Subsequent approaches are presented in the historical order, but the considerations focus on their main theoretical assumptions, areas of criticism of previous approaches and methodological solutions developed on these foundations. The approach adopted has been defined as the overriding principle of understanding the learning process.

The article discusses the challenges posed in the 21st century in terms of linguistic and communication education in terms of teaching Polish as the mother tongue. The author posited that socialisation cannot replace education, which is why one of the major goals of linguistic education in terms of the mother tongue is to satisfy the linguistic and communication needs of pupils resulting from the cultural transformations happening in the modern world.
