Screening for congenital renovascular hypoplasia and renal artery stenosis by acute converting enzyme inhibition.

1993

To evaluate the usefulness of the captopril test for identifying renal artery stenosis (RAS) and renovascular hypoplasia (RAH), we studied 48 hypertensive patients. In 20 hypertensives with screening procedures indicating renovascular disease and in 28 essential hypertensives (EH), the plasma renin activity (PRA) responses to an oral test dose of captopril (50 mg) were studied. A 60-min post-captopril PRA increase of 150% (or 400% if baseline PRA < or = 3 ng/ml/h) was considered as positive. Renal angiography was performed in all cases. Among the 20 renovascular hypertensive patients, RAH in 9 and RAS in 11 subjects were proved by angiography. The captopril test in all patients with RAH res…

Prevalence of type 2 diabetes among patients with hypertension under the care of 30 Italian clinics of hypertension: results of the (Iper)tensione an…

2008

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Hypertension is known to be highly prevalent among patients with diabetes and associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular damage. In contrast, relatively few investigations have addressed the prevalence of diabetes among patients with hypertension. The purpose of the present study was to examine the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, the effectiveness of hypertension and diabetes control and the association with other cardiovascular risk factors and previous cardiovascular diseases in a cohort of patients with hypertension referred to 30 hospital outpatient clinics for the treatment of hypertension. METHODS AND PATIENTS Patients were considered as having diabetes …

Relationship between aortic stiffness and serum uric acid in essential hypertension

2012

In last years hyperuricemia has been associated with an increased incidence of renal and cardiovascular events in general population, as well as in patients with diabetes and hypertension. However, the role of serum uric acid (SUA) as independent cardiovascular risk factor is still controversial. It is well known that increased aortic stiffness is a powerful independent predictor of cardiovascular events. Little is known about the influence of uric acid on aortic distensibility in subjects with arterial hypertension. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationships between SUA and aortic stiffness in a group of essential hypertensive patients, attending our Hypertension Centre. We enr…

ABSENCE OF AN ASSOCIATION BETWEEN SHORT-TERM BLOOD PRESSURE VARIABILITY AND MILD RENAL DYSFUNCTION IN ESSENTIAL HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS.

2014

Introduction: Studies investigating the prognostic implications of short-term blood pressure (BP) variability (STBPV), expressed as standard deviation (SD) and assessed by noninvasive 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM), yielded conflicting results. In last years further indices of STBPV have been proposed. Among these, the 24-h BP average real variability (ARV) seems to be associated with an increased cardiovascular risk more closely than the SD. Little is known about the association between mild renal dysfunction (MRD) and STBPV, and particularly between 24-h BP ARV and MRD. Aim: To analyse, in a group of essential hypertensives, the relationships between MRD and STBPV, expressed as SD o…

RELAZIONE TRA ENDOTELINA-1 PLASMATICA E STIFFNESS AORTICA IN PAZIENTI IPERTESI CON MALATTIA RENALE CRONICA

2012
