Anthropogenic processes in the evolution of a soil chronosequence on marly-limestone substrata in an Italian Mediterranean environment
Due to anthropic pressure, many areas of the world are affected by a process of soil “entisolization” that leads to the formation of “anthropogenic soils”. In order to investigate Man's role in soil evolution, a survey was carried out in Southeastern Sicily (Italy), where, for years, there have been wide farming areas with anthropogenic soils. A chronosequence of anthropogenic soils in a vineyard area, cultivated for 22 years, was investigated. The first stage of the chronosequence was made by the original soils which, in the study area, had been undisturbed till the 1980's. The goal of this work is to illustrate a methodology aimed at planning a monitoring network in urban areas affected by hydrogeological instability phenomena. The monitoring network will provide a continuous collection of data and their transmission through a Global Position System (GPS) to a central collecting and processing office. The monitoring of an area prone to high landslide risk, as could be any urban area (the town of Poggioreale in our study case), should take into consideration the collection of data relevant both for the knowledge of the landslide features as well as for the planning of reclamation action. The study area is located in the western sector of the Sicanian Mounts where the superimposition, consequence of the Miocene and Lower Pliocene tectonic transpressive phases, of different geologic bodies, having vergence to the southern quadrants, can be observed. Abstract. In 1851, the region of Sicily experienced many rainstorm-induced landslides. On 13 March 1851, a rainstorm brought about a severe rockfall disaster near the small town of Sclafani (Madonie Mountains, northern-central Sicily, Italy). Rocks detached from the carbonate crest of Mt. Sclafani (813 m above sea level) fell downslope, causing the collapse of the ancient hydrothermal spa (about 430 m above sea level) and burying it under their fragments. Fortunately, the event did not cause injuries or victims. Given its geological, geomorphological and structural features, the calcareous-dolomitic and carbonate-siliciclastic relief of Mt. GENESIS AND GEOMORPHOLOGICAL EVOLUTION OF DEEP-SEATED GRAVITATIONAL SLOPE DEFORMATIONS: AN EXAMPLE OF DATING IN WESTERN SICILY
The study area lies in the westernmost part of the Sicani Mountain range where a superposition of SE-trending, stacked, geological bodies crops out. this structure is the result of transpressive tectonic phases of Miocene and Lower Pliocene age. The neo-autochthon outcrops are made up of clay–marly deposits of the Middle–Upper Pliocene, and of calcarenites of Pleistocene age. The extensional Quaternary tectonic phases later dissected and dismembered the original structure, thus involving the calcarenites that show clear, mainly NE–SW oriented dislocations. The carbonatic siliciclastic Mesozoic reliefs of Termini Imerese-Trabia Mts. (Northern central Sicily) were selected in order to investigate groundwater resources, as these fissured to karstic aquifers are used for potable water supply. Scopo di questo lavoro è evidenziare le caratteristiche e la distribuzione spaziale dell’orizzonte gypsico proprio di suoli che evolvono su un substrato privo di gesso ma che sono da classificare come Gypsisuoli. The present note is to describe the morphogenetic processes and the relative landforms that were recognized in the area represented by the 1: 25,000 scale IGMI topographic map named Tavoletta Menfi (Serie 25/V F. 266 IV NO). The geomorphological map was realized by using the classic methodology based on direct geological and geomorphological field surveys, integrating the acquired data with the analysis of 1:18,000 scale aerial photos taken in 1997. Geomorphological evolution of western Sicily, Italy
Abstract This paper proposes a morphoevolutionary model for western Sicily. Sicily is a chain–foredeep–foreland system still being built, with tectonic activity involving uplift which tends to create new relief. To reconstruct the morphoevolutionary model, geological, and geomorphological studies were done on the basis of field survey and aerial photographic interpretation. The collected data show large areas characterized by specific geological, geomorphological, and topographical settings with rocks, landforms, and landscapes progressively older from south to north Sicily. An integrated review of existing geological and geophysical data – partly acquired during oil and gas exploration – combined with new data provided by deep geothermal studies of selected key areas, was used for the 3D modeling and mapping of the top of the geothermal reservoir developed at a regional scale in Sicily (Central Mediterranean). The resulting 1:500,000 scale map covers the area of the whole Sicily (about 25,700 km2) and is devoted to represent the main input for both the thermal modeling and the evaluation of geothermal potential at a regional scale.
