Prevalence of diabetic neuropathy with somatic symptoms: A door-to-door survey in two Sicilian municipalities
In a door-to-door survey conducted in two municipalities of Sicily, we ascertained the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy. Our case-finding was restricted to subjects with somatic symptoms. During phase 1, we administered a screening instrument for peripheral neuropathy to 14,540 persons residing in Santa Teresa di Riva (Messina Province) and Terrasini (Palermo Province). During phase 2, neurologists evaluated those subjects who had screened positive. Diagnoses were based on clinical criteria only, and were reviewed by an adjudication panel. We found 39 persons (27 women, 12 men) affected by diabetic neuropathy. The crude prevalence, as of November 1, 1987, was 268.2 cases per 100,000 popula…
PO-162 Long non coding RNA H19 (IncH19) is required for the hypoxia mediated multiple myeloma progression
ABSTRACT Introduction Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant disorder of post-germinal centre B cells, characterised by the clonal proliferation of malignant plasma cells within the bone marrow (BM). The hypoxic condition that develops in the BM niche during progression of MM, has been shown to play a major role in i) the dissemination of MM, ii) the proliferation of MM cells and iii) the induction of drug resistance finally determining a poor prognosis for MM patients. The molecular mechanisms driving hypoxic responses is the activation and nuclear translocation of the Hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha, (HIF1α) that, in turns, induce the expression of genes controlling angiogenesis, hypermeta…
Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Post-Stroke Aphasia Rehabilitation: Bilateral vs Unilateral Online Stimulation
Here we aim to evaluate the efficacy of repeated sessions of transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) as additional treatment to standard behavioural rehabilitation in post-stroke aphasic patients comparing bilateral with unilateral left-sided and sham-tDCS. Background: Aphasia is the most common post-stroke cognitive disorder and it severely impacts activities of daily living and social interactions. tDCS recently showed good results in post-stroke aphasia rehabilitiation, even if no agreement at now exists about the stimulation parameters to employ to achieve the best rehabilitative outcome. Design/Methods: We enrolled twenty-two patients with single left-brain lesion at CT or MRI s…
How initial and boundary conditions affect protoplanetary migration in a turbulent sub-Keplerian accretion disc: 2D non-viscous SPH simulations
Current theories on planetary formation establish that giant planet formation should be contextual to their quick migration towards the central star due to the protoplanets-disc interactions on a timescale of the order of $10^5$ years, for objects of nearly 10 terrestrial masses. Such a timescale should be smaller by an order of magnitude than that of gas accretion onto the protoplanet during the hierarchical growing-up of protoplanets by collisions with other minor objects. These arguments have recently been analysed using N-body and/or fluid-dynamics codes or a mixing of them. In this work, inviscid 2D simulations are performed, using the SPH method, to study the migration of one protopla…
