ABSTRACT Many seafarers have had their first encounter with seafaring life on board a school ship. A school ship course was a welcome offer for young boys who wantet to go to sea. This master thesis is related to the school ship movement; a movement that started in England in the late 18th century. The main focus in this assigment is the Norwegian school ship «Sørlandet». The school ship has its home port in the town of Kristiansand. The background for the construction of the school ship «Sørlandet» was a gift certificate from Kristiansand shipowner Oluf Andreas Tollefsen Skjelbred in 1918. In the letter he donates an amount of £ 25 000. The purpose was the construction of the school ship.T…
