TAKOTSUBO CARDIOMYOPATHY
[Diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of "myocardial bridging": state of the art and unresolved issues].
The current gold standard for the diagnosis of myocardial bridging is conventional coronary angiography; however, it shows only indirect signs of the disease, due to the systolic compression of the artery caused by the myocardial bridge with narrowing of the lumen and diastolic relaxation. On the other hand, computed tomography coronary angiography, even though exposing to radiation, clearly demonstrates the intramural course, the overlying muscular bands and the surrounding tissues also in asymptomatic patients and in absence of systolic compression. The prognosis of patients with myocardial bridge is usually good, but further studies are needed to evaluate the long-term prognosis of these…

Ischemic and non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy
Abstract Dilated Cardiomyopathy is a high-incident disease, which diagnosis of and treatments are clinical priority. The aim of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic potential of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging; echocardiography and the biochemical parameters that can help us differentiate between the post-ischemic and non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy. Materials and methods. The study enrolled 134 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy: 74 with the post-ischemic form and 60 with the non-ischemic one. All patients underwent a coronary imaging test, with echocardiogram, cardiac magnetic resonance and a blood test. Pro-inflammatory cytokines were evaluated using Luminex kit. Data …

Morpho-volumetric assessment of the right ventricle: a comparison between three-dimensional echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance
The morpho-volumetric assessment of the right ventricle (RV) is useful in the diagnosis and prognosis of many congenital and acquired cardiovascular diseases. The complexity of the right ventricular shape does not allow an adequate and satisfactory evaluation of the RV. Two-dimensional (2D) echocardiography is the most used tool for the assessment of RV function, as it is a noninvasive, reproducible and widespread technique, but the geometric assumptions required for measurement of RV volumes reduce its accuracy. At present, cardiac magnetic resonance is the gold standard for the evaluation of RV volumes because it does not need any assumption and is reproducible, though not always availabl…
ATRIAL FIBRILLATION AND MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT: WHAT CORRELATION?
ATRIAL FIBRILLATION AND MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT: WHAT CORRELATION? Aim. Atrial fibrillation (AF), in addition to macroembolic complications, may also produce multiple cerebral ischemic areas due to microembolic phenomena and transient hypoperfusion, eventually leading to a progressive cognitive impairment and even to acclaimed vascular dementia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of cognitive impairment in patients with AF. The reported results concern data obtained at the moment of recruitment. Methods. The authors studied 42 patients with a history of non valvular AF (paroxysmal, persistent, recurrent or permanent) and 40 homogenous controls in sinus rhythm without pre…

Attuali orientamenti nella diagnosi e nel trattamento delle aderenze placentari patologiche: la nostra esperienza
The abnormal adherence of the placenta is a disease characterized by an anomalous miometrial infiltration of Chorionic villi. This event blocks the regular detachment of placenta in post partum and sometimes a severe bleeding that causes the urgency of a caesarean section. In the past years the incidence of this pathology has increased to about 1 in 500/600 deliveries. The cause of abnormal adherence of placenta is unknown but there are some risk factors such as prior caesarean sections, women older than 35 years of age and placenta previa. The early diagnosis is very important and it can be done by Eco-Color-doppler (eventually associated with 3d technique) and Magnetic Resonance. Objectiv…

Analisi delle modificazioni indotte dalla microgravità sulla reazione di orientamento indotta nel ratto da stimoli acustici.
Experiments were performed on male Wistar rat during the 4th ESA Student Parabolioc Flight Campaign. Analysis of head turning movement has been employed to study mechanisms involved in sensorimotor integration. Results showed a significant increase both in latency and duration of the response in microgravity condition. A modified cerebellar elaboration process of peripheral proprioceptive and vestibular signals during microgravity has been hypothesized.

Magnetic resonance in isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium
Abstract Non-compaction of the ventricular myocardium (LCVM) is a rare disorder of myocardial morphogenesis usually diagnosed in paediatric age. The diagnosis was echocardiographically made on the basis of a reported spongeous/compacted ratio >2 in one or more segments of the left ventricle during the diastolic period. We aimed to test the diagnostic accuracy of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging in distinguishing pathological left ventricular non-compaction. Methods We collected a consecutive series of 8 patients, 5 males and 3 females, with a mean age of 14.9 years with non-compaction of left ventricular myocardium. All patients were admitted in our divisions of cardiology. I…
VENTRICULAR DYSFUNCTION AND NUMBER OF NON COMPACTED SEGMENTS IN NON COMPACTION: NON-INDEPENDENT PREDICTORS
VENTRICULAR DYSFUNCTION AND NUMBER OF NON COMPACTED SEGMENTS IN NON COMPACTION: NON-INDEPENDENT PREDICTORS BACKGROUND: Isolated ventricular noncompaction (IVNC) is characterized by multiple prominent trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses. Some reports prove that the chronic heart failure may occur in approximately half of the patients. In this report we investigate the correlation between the number of non compacted segments and entity of systolic dysfunction from the registry and subregistries of the SIEC. METHOD: To identify the correlation between ventricular dysfunction and number of segments involved in non compaction we evaluated a consecutive series of 238 patients affecte…
