Naturalistic Hydroseeding

The applications usually want to restore an adequate level of vegetation cover, to contrast effectively erosion and slope instability, however, often neglecting the naturalistic appearance. Really we should combine the technical aspect with the naturalistic, aiming to eliminate non-native species from vegetation context and to guide the choice of usable herbaceous species. The study, carried out in a dump of a southern Italian town (Termini Imerese - Sicily), provided for the reconstitution of plant cover of 7.4 hectares through hydroseeding applied directly on the soil of the final covering, with waste often exposed. The aim of this study was the use of alternative hydroseeding with the us…

Endothelium-derived factors in microalbuminuric and nonmicroalbuminuric essential hypertensives

Previous evidence has demonstrated a relationship between growth factors and cardiovascular diseases. This study was aimed at evaluating levels of some endothelium-derived growth factors, and their relationship with microalbuminuria (MAU), in essential hypertension. Ninety-nine mild-moderate essential hypertensives (EH) and 25 healthy controls were studied. All patients underwent 24-h blood pressure monitoring, serum endothelin-1 (ET-1), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and 24-h MAU assays. Later, EH were divided into two subsets consisting of microalbuminurics (MAU >11 microg/min) and nonmicroalbuminurics (MAU <11 microg/min). In microalbumin…

BIOLOGICAL MONITORING AND NEPHROTOXIC SUBSTANCES

A long latent period elapses between the exposure to toxic substances, injuring the kidney and the development of advanced stages of kidney failure. As regards the biological monitoring of people exposed to nephrotoxic substances, we need precocious indicators of renal damages, able to avoid the onset of nephropathies. The aim of this study has been underlining these biological markers. We have considered two groups of workers: the first one made up of people exposed to aromatic poly cyclic hydrocarbons (APH). The second one was made up of people exposed to welding smokes. We have examined 240 male subjects. The entire sample has been subjected to the dosing of the following biological indi…

Contributo alla conoscenza floristica dei monti Sicani (Sicilia): resoconto dell’escursione del Gruppo di Floristica (S.B.I.) nel 2012

The results of the excursion of the “Gruppo di Floristica” of the Italian Botanical Society held in the Sicani Mountains (CW-Sicily) on May 3-6, 2012, are here presented. During the research a total of 532 taxa was recorded. Three of them, the native Rosa squarrosa and the alien Phyllostachys aurea and Vitis ×koberi are new to Sicily, and 14 are new to the Sicani Mts. On the other side, we confirm the exclusion of Erica manipuliflora from the flora of the region.

Antibacterial and antitumoral activities of new organotin(IV)-Schiff bases derivatives

This preliminary report shows eight complexes of triorganotin(IV): Ph3SnOH and (CH3)3SnOH with four chelating imines on new synthesis. Of these ligands, two are salen-like (four coordination sites, two imidic, two phenoxidic) [1], one is a tetradentate pyrrole derivative [2] while the fourth, a vita- min B6 derivative, is pentadentate [3]. Ligands have been characterized by means of FT-IR, UV-Vis, Fluorescence, 1H- and 13C-NMR, LC-MS ESI triple quadrupole; complexes by means FT-IR, 1H- and 119Sn-NMR, LC-MS ESI, using the isotopic distribution pattern as a discriminant [4]. Geometry and nature of coordination complexes have been also evaluated using the 119Sn chemical shifts. Solid-state syn…
