Evaluating actual evapotranspiration by means of multi-platform remote sensing data: A case study in Sicily

During the last two decades, the scientific community developed detailed mathematical models for simulating land surface energy fluxes and crop evapotranspiration rates by means of an energy balance approach. These models can be applied in large areas and with a spatial distributed approach using surface brightness temperature and some ancillary data retrieved from satellite/airborne remote sensed imagery. In this paper a district scale application, in combination with multispectral satellite and airborne data has been carried out to test the potential of two different energy balance models to estimate evapotranspiration fluxes from a set of typical Mediterranean crops (wine, olive, citrus)…

The impact of in-canopy wind profile formulations on heat flux estimation using the remote sensing-based two-source model for an open orchard canopy in southern Italy

Abstract. For open orchard and vineyard canopies containing significant fractions of exposed soil (>50%), typical of Mediterranean agricultural regions, the energy balance of the vegetation elements is strongly influenced by heat exchange with the bare soil/substrate. For these agricultural systems a "two-source" approach, where radiation and turbulent exchange between the soil and canopy elements are explicitly modelled, appears to be the only suitable methodology for reliably assessing energy fluxes. In strongly clumped canopies, the effective wind speed profile inside and below the canopy layer can highly influence the partitioning of energy fluxes between the soil and vegetation comp…

Assessing AQUACROP water stress function to evaluate the transpiration reductions of olive tree.

Quantitative evaluation of the drought adaptation processes of crops is an important prerequisite for efficient irrigation management. Modeling the plant response under water stress conditions is crucial to identify the exact irrigation timing. Assessment of any water stress function requires the knowledge of its shape and then the estimation of critical thresholds of the soil water status, below which a strong reduction of plant transpiration occurs. In this work, the macroscopic approach is used to assess the water stress function implemented in AQUACROP for mature olive tree. In particular, after discussing about the function shape, the critical thresholds of soil water status are propos…

ASSESSING FAO-56 MODEL TO ESTIMATE TABLE OLIVE WATER CONSUME UNDER SOIL WATER DEFICIT CONDITIONS

Agro-hydrological models can be considered an economic and simple tool to quantify crop water requirements. In the last two decades, agro-hydrological physically based models have been developed to simulate mass and energy exchange processes in the soil-plant-atmosphere system. Although very reliable, due to the high number of required variables, simplified models have been proposed as simple tools to quantify crop water consumes. The main aim of the paper is to assess, for a Sicilian orchard of table olive, the suitability of FAO-56 agro-hydrological model to estimate the crop transpiration under soil water deficit conditions. The model validation is carried out by means of measurements of…

TURF-BOX: an active lighting multispectral imaging system with led VIS-NIR sources for monitoring of vegetated surfaces

A microcontroller driven system suitable to monitor soil and low vegetation is described. A radiometrically pre-calibrated imaging camera driven by a microcontroller is contained in a light-tight box aiming at an actively illuminated target surface area of 50×38 cm, using LED sources with different emission wavelengths (blue, green, red and infrared). The adopted arrangement allows measurements independent from local lighting conditions and from the in situ, per-session calibrations necessary with the conventional instrumentation adopted for field measurements. Sequential lighting of the target surface with the monochromatic LED sources allows capturing multispectral images at a relatively …
