Isomeric state in the doubly odd196At nucleus

An excited isomeric state has been identified in the 196At nucleus using the recoil decay tagging technique. This is the first identification of an excited state in this neutron-deficient odd-odd nucleus. Several tentative prompt γ-rays have also been correlated with 196At α-decay, although it has not been possible to assign them to specific energy levels in 196At. The mean lifetime of the isomeric state has been measured as τ = 11±2 µs. The new level is compared with similar low-lying states in neighbouring nuclei and is de-excited by an E2 γ-ray transition, the large hindrance of which is not expected.

Structure of the As, Ge, Ga nuclei

Abstract The level structures of the N = 50 83As, 82Ge, and 81Ga isotones have been investigated by means of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A first experiment was performed with the CLARA–PRISMA setup to identify these nuclei. A second experiment was carried out with the GASP array in order to deduce the γ-ray coincidence information. The results obtained on the high-spin states of such nuclei are used to test the stability of the N = 50 shell closure in the region of 78Ni ( Z = 28 ). The comparison of the experimental level schemes with the shell-model calculations yields an N = 50 energy gap value of 4.7(3) MeV at Z = 28 . High-j bands in 173Ir

Abstract High-spin states in rotational bands associated with the 11 2 − [505] , 1 2 − [541] and 1 2 + [660] Nilsson orbits have been observed in the previously unknown 173Ir nucleus using the 144Sm(32S,p2n) reaction at 163 MeV. The B(M1; I → I − 1)/B(E2; I → I −2) ratios have been extracted for the 11 2 − [505] band and compared with predictions of the semiempirical model by Donau and Frauendorf. The quasineutron band crossing frequencies and alignment gains are discussed in terms of the CSM model. Calculations for equilibrium deformations suggest different deformations for the three bands observed.

Identification of the Jπ = 1− state in 218Ra populated via α decay of 222Th

The α decay of 222Th populating the low-lying J π = 3− state, and also a proposed 1− state, in 218Ra has been observed. The observations suggest an excitation energy of 853 keV for the 1− state, which is 60 keV above the 3− state. The hindrance factors of these α decays give a possible boundary to the region of ground-state octupole deformation in the light-actinide nuclei. The relative positions of the J π = 1− and 3− states suggest they are produced by an octupole-vibrational mechanism, as opposed to α clustering or rotations of a reflection-asymmetric octupole-deformed shape. peerReviewed

Nucleon transfer via (d,p) using TIARA with a24Ne radioactive beam

NESTER; The first physics results measured using the TIARA array are reported. The reaction $^{24}$Ne(d,p)$^{25}$Ne has been studied in inverse kinematics with a radioactive beam of $^(24)$Ne provided by SPIRAL at GANIL. TIARA is very compact with a high geometrical coverage for charged particles, and is designed specifically for the study of transfer reactions in inverse kinematics, with radioactive beams. From the (d,p) differential cross sections, the ground state of $^{25}$Ne is assigned to have $J^\pi$ = $1/2^+$ and the lowest states with $J^\pi$ = $5/2^+$ and $3/2^+$ are tentatively identified at excitation energies of 1.70 and 2.05 (±0.05) MeV, respectively. Study of medium-spin states of neutron-rich 87, 89, 91Rb isotopes

International audience; Excited states of the rubidium isotopes$_{37}^{87, 89, 91}$Rb have been studied at the INFN Legnaro National Laboratory. Measurements of the $\gamma$ -ray decay of fragments produced in binary grazing reactions resulting from the interaction of a beam of 530 MeV$^{96}$Zr ions with a$^{124}$Sn target have been complemented by studies of the $\gamma$ -ray decay of fission fragments produced in the interaction of a beam of 230 MeV$^{36}$S ions with a thick$^{176}$Yb target. The structure of the yrast states of$_{37}^{87, 89, 91}$Rb has been discussed within the context of spherical shell-model and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

Single-neutron orbits near 78 Ni: Spectroscopy of theN=49isotope 79 Zn

Single-neutron states in the Z=30, N=49isotope 79Zn have been populated using the 78Zn(d,p)79Zn transfer reaction at REX-ISOLDE, CERN. The experimental setup allowed the combined detection of protons ejected in the reaction, and of γrays emitted by 79Zn. The analysis reveals that the lowest excited states populated in the reaction lie at approximately 1MeV of excitation, and involve neutron orbits above the N=50shell gap. From the analysis of γ-ray data and of proton angular distributions, characteristic of the amount of angular momentum transferred, a5/2+configuration was assigned to a state at 983keV. Study of high spins in $^{173}$Os

High-spin states in 173Os have been studied by γγ-coincidence measurements following the 146Nd(32S, 5n)173Os reaction. Additional information has also been extracted from the reaction 144Sm(32S, 2pn)173Os. Four main sequencies have been identified as the two signature branches of the bands built on the [642]52+ and [523]52− Nilsson states. The band features have been analysed within the framework of the cranked shell model. Generation and Evolution of Spin-, Valley-, and Layer-Polarized Excited Carriers in Inversion-Symmetric WSe2

We report the spin-selective optical excitation of carriers in inversion-symmetric bulk samples of the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) WSe2. Employing time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (trARPES) and complementary time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), we observe spin-, valley-, and layer-polarized excited state populations upon excitation with circularly polarized pump pulses, followed by ultrafast ( < 100     fs ) scattering of carriers towards the global minimum of the conduction band. Gamma-spectroscopy of the 199At nucleus with the recoil filter detector

The neutron deficient 199At nucleus has been studied in the 175Lu+28Si reaction at Eb= 141 MeV. In order to select events of interest in the presence of the very strong background caused by fission, γ-rays have been detected in coincidence with recoiling evaporation residues. The excited states of 199At observed for the first time may indicate that this nucleus is deformed.

First observation of excited states in $^{197}$At: the onset of deformation in neutron-deficient astatine nuclei

Excited states in the Z= 85 nucleus 197At have been identified for the first time using the recoil-decay-tagging (RDT) technique. The excitation energy of these states is found to be consistent with the systematics of neutron-deficient astatine nuclei and with theoretical calculations indicating that the nucleus may be deformed in its ground state.

High-spin states in the neutron-rich A∼100 region

Two experimental setups have been used to study excited states of neutron‐rich nuclei in the A∼100 region. Extended level schemes and lifetime measurements were obtained using deep‐inelastic and fusion‐fission reactions with the CLARA‐PRISMA spectrometer and the Ge‐array GASP respectively. Experimental information from GASP has been used to complement the CLARA‐PRISMA experiment. Time spectra have been used to measure the lifetimes of isomeric states. Preliminary results are presented for 89Rb.

Excited states in 217Ra populated in the α decay of 221Th

Fine structure in the α decay of 22190Th, populating excited states in 21788Ra, was studied using αγ-coincidence spectroscopy. Two α-decay branches from 221Th have been newly observed, with Eα(keV)[bα(%)]=7951(8)[0.14(3)] and 8247(3)[1.51(12)], together with three previously known branches. Also, two new states in 217Ra were identified at E = 177 and 227 keV. The ground-state configurations of the odd-A, N = 131 transitional isotones above 208Pb are interpreted from their α-decay fine structure systematics and considered in terms of predictions using spherical shell and reflection-asymmetric models. peerReviewed

α-decay spectroscopy of the N = 130 isotones 218Ra and 220Th: Mitigation of α-particle energy summing with implanted nuclei

An analysis technique has been developed in order to mitigate energy summing due to sequential short-lived α decays from nuclei implanted into a silicon detector. Using this technique, α-decay spectroscopy of the N=130 isotones 218Ra (Z=88) and 220Th (Z=90) has been performed. The energies of the α particles emitted in the 218Ra→214Rn and 220Th→216Ra ground-state-to-ground-state decays have been measured to be 8381(4) keV and 8818(13) keV, respectively. The half-lives of the ground states of 218Ra and 220Th have been measured to be 25.99(10) μs and 10.4(4) μs, respectively. Single-particle states and parity doublets in odd-Z 221Ac and 225Pa from α-decay spectroscopy

Low-lying states in the odd-Z isotopes 22189Ac132 and 22591Pa134 have been studied using α-particle and αγ-coincidence spectroscopy in the 225Pa→221Ac→217Fr decay chain. Ground-state spin and parity assignments of Iπ = 5/2− are proposed for both 221Ac and 225Pa, with the odd proton occupying the Ω = 5/2 orbital of the quadrupole-octupole deformed shell model in both nuclei. In 221Ac, excited states in the bands based on the Ω = 5/2 and Ω = 3/2 orbitals have been identified, including proposed parity-doublet states.
