Shape coexistence in the neutron-deficient even-even Hg182-188 isotopes studied via Coulomb excitation

2014

Coulomb-excitation experiments to study electromagnetic properties of radioactive even-even Hg isotopes were performed with 2.85  MeV/nucleon mercury beams from REX-ISOLDE. Magnitudes and relative signs of the reduced E2 matrix elements that couple the ground state and low-lying excited states in Hg182-188 were extracted. Information on the deformation of the ground and the first excited 0+ states was deduced using the quadrupole sum rules approach. Results show that the ground state is slightly deformed and of oblate nature, while a larger deformation for the excited 0+ state was noted in Hg182,184. The results are compared to beyond mean field and interacting-boson based models and interp…

Structure of rotational bands in 253No

2009

In-beam gamma-ray and conversion electron spectroscopic studies have been performed on the 253 No nucleus. A strongly coupled rotational band has been identified and the improved statistics allows an assignment of the band structure as built on the $\ensuremath 9/2^-[734]_{\nu}$ ground state. The results agree with previously known transition energies but disagree with the tentative structural assignments made in earlier work.

Lifetime measurements in neutron-rich63,65Co isotopes using the AGATA demonstrator

2013

Lifetimes of the low-lying (11/2-) states in 63,65Co have been measured employing the recoil distance doppler shift method (RDDS) with the AGATA γ-ray array and the PRISMA mass spectrometer. These nuclei were populated via a multinucleon transfer reaction by bombarding a 238U target with a beam of 64Ni. The experimental B(E2) reduced transition probabilities for 63,65Co are well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations that predict a constant trend of the B(E2) values up to the N=40 67Co isotope

Collectivity in the light radon nuclei measured directly via Coulomb excitation

2015

Background: Shape coexistence in heavy nuclei poses a strong challenge to state-of-the-art nuclear models, where several competing shape minima are found close to the ground state. A classic region for investigating this phenomenon is in the region around Z=82 and the neutron midshell at N=104. Purpose: Evidence for shape coexistence has been inferred from α-decay measurements, laser spectroscopy, and in-beam measurements. While the latter allow the pattern of excited states and rotational band structures to be mapped out, a detailed understanding of shape coexistence can only come from measurements of electromagnetic matrix elements. Method: Secondary, radioactive ion beams of Rn202 and Rn…

Magicity of theN68iSemidouble-Closed-Shell Nucleus Probed by Gamow-Teller Decay of the Odd-ANeighbors

1999

The particle-hole excitations through the $N\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}40$ subshell around ${}^{68}\mathrm{Ni}$ have been studied by the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of ${}^{69}\mathrm{Co}$ and ${}^{69}\mathrm{Ni}$. The half-life of ${}^{69}\mathrm{Co}$ was measured to be 0.22(2) s, and a new $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decaying isomer with a half-life of 3.5(5) s was identified in ${}^{69}\mathrm{Ni}$. From the decay of the ${}^{69}\mathrm{Ni}$ isomer a 9(4)% mixing of the $\ensuremath{\pi}{p}_{3/2}^{+1}\ensuremath{\nu}{p}_{1/2}^{\ensuremath{-}2}\ensuremath{\nu}{g}_{9/2}^{+2}$ configuration into the ground state of ${}^{69}\mathrm{Cu}$ can be deduced. β decay of67Co

1999

The \ensuremath{\beta}-decay properties of ${}^{67}\mathrm{Co}$ produced in proton-induced fission of ${}^{238}\mathrm{U}$ were measured by the detection of \ensuremath{\beta}-delayed \ensuremath{\gamma} rays emitted from an isotopically pure mass-separated source obtained by laser ionization. The measured half-life of 0.425(20) s is more accurate than previous values. New \ensuremath{\gamma} transitions were observed, and corresponding branching ratios and $\mathrm{log}\mathrm{ft}$ values were deduced. The ${}^{67}\mathrm{Co}$ decay scheme is discussed in terms of the single-particle shell model.

Beta decay of neutron-rich Co: Probing single-particle states at and above the N=40 subshell closure

1999

Neutron-rich Co nuclei with A=66–70 were produced by the laser-ionization isotope-separation on-line method. The β decay from these nuclei has been studied. A case example is given by reporting on the observed decay scheme of 68Co. The half life of the ground-state decay of this nucleus was measured to be 0.21(3) seconds. In addition, a new β decaying isomer half life of 1.16(25) seconds was discovered. The level scheme of 68Ni has been significantly extended, and an interpretation of the observed levels is made by assuming that the N=40 gap has the characteristics of a shell closure.

Status of HIGISOL a new version equipped with SPIG and electric field guidance

2001

A new HIGISOL chamber devoted to the study of short-lived products from heavy-ion-induced fusion-evaporation reactions is proposed. It enables, via the extraction of ions by means of a SPIG (SextuPole rf Ion Guide), to improve the mass resolving power by a factor 2.5 compared to the previous system using a skimmer-ring assembly. The gas cell was also equiped with an electric field for faster transportation of recoiling ions to the nozzle where they are ejected with the gas jet. The first results obtained both with a radioactive α-source and cyclotron beam will be reported.

Electromagnetic properties of low-lying states in neutron-deficient Hg isotopes: Coulomb excitation of Hg-182, Hg-184, Hg-186 and Hg-188

2019

The neutron-deficient mercury isotopes serve as a classical example of shape coexistence, whereby at low energy near-degenerate nuclear states characterized by different shapes appear. The electromagnetic structure of even-mass 182-188 Hg isotopes was studied using safe-energy Coulomb excitation of neutron-deficient mercury beams delivered by the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The population of $ 0^{+}_{1,2}$01,2+, $ 2^{+}_{1,2}$21,2+and $ 4^{+}_{1}$41+states was observed in all nuclei under study. Reduced E2 matrix elements coupling populated yrast and non-yrast states were extracted, including their relative signs. These are a sensitive probe of shape coexistence and may be used to validate…

Study of isomeric states in $^{198,200,202,206}$Pb and $^{206}$Hg populated in fragmentation reactions

2018

International audience; Isomeric states in isotopes in the vicinity of doubly-magic 208Pb were populatedfollowing reactions of a relativistic 208Pb primary beam impinging on a9Be fragmentation target. Secondary beams of 198,200,202,206Pb and 206Hg wereisotopically separated and implanted in a passive stopper positioned in thefocal plane of the GSI Fragment Separator. Delayed γ rays were detected withthe Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA). Decay schemes were reevaluatedand interpreted with shell-model calculations. The momentumdependentpopulation of isomeric states in the two-nucleon hole nuclei206Pb/206Hg was found to differ from the population of multi neutron-holeisomeric states in 198…

Beta decay of neutron-rich cobalt and nickel isotopes

1998

We report on the first β-γ spectroscopy measurements of the neutron-rich 68–70Co and 70–74Ni nuclei, produced in proton-induced fission of 238U and ionized in a laser ion guide coupled to an on-line mass separator. Several γ lines from the decay of these nuclei have been identified, half-lives determined and production cross sections deduced. The derived level schemes for the copper and nickel isotopes show that the occupation of the ν(1g9/2) state has a strong influence on the structure of these neutron-rich nuclei. This may have a clear impact on the predicted structure and decay properties of doubly-magic 78Ni.

Role of the Δ Resonance in the Population of a Four-Nucleon State in the Fe56→Fe54 Reaction at Relativistic Energies

2016

The 54Fe nucleus was populated from a 56Fe beam impinging on a Be target with an energy of E=A ¼ 500 MeV. The internal decay via γ-ray emission of the 10þ metastable state was observed. As the structure of this isomeric state has to involve at least four unpaired nucleons, it cannot be populated in a simple two-neutron removal reaction from the 56Fe ground state. The isomeric state was produced in the low-momentum (-energy) tail of the parallel momentum (energy) distribution of 54Fe, suggesting that it was populated via the decay of the Δ0 resonance into a proton. This process allows the population of fournucleon states, such as the observed isomer. Therefore, it is concluded that the obser…
