Prevalence and distribution of oral mucosal non-malignant lesions in the western Sicilian population.
BACKGROUNG: The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of oral mucosal non-malignant lesions in the Sicilian population. In addition, we evaluated the association between each oral lesion and its risk factors. METHODS: This study analyzed a total of 2539 consecutive patients, attending the Department of Surgical, Oncological and Stomatological Disciplines of Palermo University, who were examined for the presence of various oral lesions during the period from January 2012 and February 2015. Oral Blue Nevus: Case Report
Abstract: Aim of this research is the description of a case of palatal blue nevus and the diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to adopt when this oral lesion occurs. Nevi are benign proliferations of nevus cells either in the epithelium or in the subepithelial stroma. Blue nevus of the oral mucosa is a rare lesion. The oral blue nevi are asymptomatic and have no malignant potential. More importantly blue nevus had to be differentiated from malignant melanoma. Because is difficult to distinguish oral melanocytic nevi from melanoma we believe that any oral lesion in question should be excised and sent for histopathologic evaluation.
Matrix metalloproteinase-2 matrix metalloproteinase-9 and inducible nitric oxide synthase in oral leukoplakia: Immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR analysis
Oral leukoplakia is the most common and potentially malignant disorder of the oral mucosa. The definition of leukoplakia given by the World Health Organization is "a white plaque that cannot be characterized either from a clinical or from a histopathological point of view", thus the diagnosis of leukoplakia is based on the exclusion of other lesions of the oral mucosa. We believe it is necessary to identify molecular and immunohistochemical parameters that can contribute to discriminating between the different leukoplakia clinical subtypes coded by the epidemiology. Non-Syndrome Patient with Multiple Supernumerary Teeth: Case Report
Polydentia is a variation in excess in the number of the teeth. Supernumerary teeth appear, especially in the maxilla, mostly between the central incisors (mesiodens) and in molars region. These positions are followed by the maxillary fourth molars, maxillary paramolars, mandibular premolars, maxillary lateral incisors, mandibular fourth molars and maxillary premolars. Supernumerary teeth may occur in single or multiple numbers bilateral occurrence is uncommon. It is rare to find multiple supernumeraries in individuals with no other associated disease or syndrome. The purpose of this study is to present, a case with mutiple supernumerary teeth in non-syndrome patient.
Management of Primary Non-Aggressive Mandibular Giant Cell Tumor: A 14 Years' Experience
Giant cell tumor is a rare non-odontogenic lesion that represents approximately 4-5% of all primary bone tumors. Such lesions derive their actual name from the constant presence of numerous giant cells, similar to osteoclasts .All the giant cell tumors hystorically is treated with curettage. Because this conservative approach is often associated with a recurrence rate of up to 70% , aggressive resection has become the standard practice. Unfortunately ,recurrence after wide resection is about 7%. The aim of the study is to describe the 14 years single institution experience with management of primary non-aggressive giant cell tumor of the jaws bone.
Sweet's syndrome induced by removable partial denture using a CoCr alloy: case report.
Sweet's syndrome is an acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis characterized by fever, neutrophilia and erythematous skin lesions. This disease typically occurs as a reactive event in response to infective, inflammatory or neoplastic processes. The aim of this work was to describe a rare case of Sweet's syndrome induced by dental removable partial denture using a CoCr alloy.
