ABSTRACTWe present a 2-year time-lag study in which Canadian and Spanish students’ perceptions of stress, identity problems, and psychosocial maturity (ego strengths) were examined in relation to academic, social, and personal-emotional adjustment to university under different conditions of macro-environmental disruption (i.e., academic and economic) and no disruption (stability). In the academic disturbance context, students reported increased stress and the economic disruption situation was associated with greater identity problems. The Identity Distress Scale (IDS) was developed as a clinical indicator of severe disturbance or interference in identity development (Berman, Montgomery, & Kurtines, 2004) based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as identity disorder (DSM–III–R) and, subsequently, as identity problem (DSM–IV). This study examined various indices of identity distress as indexed by the IDS in relation to several antecedents and outcome measures among university students in Canada and Spain. Identity distress, psychological symptoms, and adjustment to university (academic, social, and person-emotional) were examined among students in Spain (N = 241; Mage = 19.0 (1.6), Md = 19; 84% female) and Canada (N = 531; Mage = 19.8 (2.2), Md = 19; 82% female). The expected positive relationships were found between these variables. Similarly, increased identity distress of Spanish students and greater maladjustment at university for those in Canada were associated with contextual differences in the respective environments.
