High intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe

2013

The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Frejus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of mu(+) and mu(-) beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt magnetized iron neutrino detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neu…

The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey

2012

The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey has begun and will obtain high quality spectroscopy of some 100000 Milky Way stars, in the field and in open clusters, down to magnitude 19, systematically covering all the major components of the Milky Way. This survey will provide the first homogeneous overview of the distributions of kinematics and chemical element abundances in the Galaxy. The motivation, organisation and implementation of the Gaia-ESO Survey are described, emphasising the complementarity with the ESA Gaia mission. Spectra from the very first observing run of the survey are presented.

Large bulk Micromegas detectors for TPC applications

2009

A large volume TPC will be used in the near future in a variety of experiments including T2K. The bulk Micromegas detector for this TPC is built using a novel production technique particularly suited for compact, thin and robust low mass detectors. The capability to pave a large Surface with a simple mounting Solution and small dead space is of particular interest for these applications. We have built several large bulk Micromegas detectors (36 x 34 cm(2)) and we have tested one in the former HARP field cage with a magnetic field. Prototypes cards of the T2K front end electronics, based on the AFTER ASIC chip, have been used in this TPC test for the first time. Cosmic ray data have been acq…

Clinical evaluation criteria for the assessment of impaired pain sensitivity by thulium-laser evoked potentials

2000

Abstract Objectives : Cortical potentials evoked by carbon dioxide laser pulses have been applied in clinical practice to study nociceptive pathways for several years. In this study, we evaluate the properties of an infrared laser (thulium-YAG) with a penetration depth in the skin that matches the intracutaneous depth of nociceptors. Methods : Temperature measurements and modelling showed that the thulium laser generates painful intracutaneous temperatures with less surface heating than the carbon dioxide laser and with no side effects (up to 600 mJ pulse energy). To develop clinical evaluation criteria, laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) were recorded from 3 midline positions (Fz, Cz, Pz) vers…

Abolished laser-evoked potentials and normal blink reflex in midlateral medullary infarction.

1999

We investigated two patients presenting with the rare finding of almost isolated hemianalgesia with a sensory level on the contralateral side sparing the face. Clinical findings, electrophysiological studies (absent laser-evoked pain-related somatosensory potentials, normal electrically evoked somatosensory potentials, magnetically evoked potentials, and blink reflexes), and magnetic resonance imaging showed the ventrolateral medullar tegmentum containing the spinothalamic tract to be affected by lacunar infarction. The blink reflex R2 component was unimpaired in both patients.

Autoimmune endocrine ophthalmopathy and retrobulbar antigens.

1995

Endocrine Ophthalmopathy (EO) is based on autoimmune processes that lead to lymphocyte infiltration of the retrobulbar space. In this study, antigenic character of retrobulbar adipose, connective and muscle tissue as well as of cultured fibroblasts and myoblasts were examined. Samples were obtained from EO patients (n = 13, 8 fem., age 26-82 years, median 47 years) undergoing orbital decompression surgery. Retrobulbar and abdominal tissue from 7 controls (4 fem., 48 - 74 y) was investigated, too. Tissues were homogenized and the proteins were separated by SDS-PAGE according to molecular weight. In order to recover the separated proteins in soluble form, an electroelution technique was emplo…

Indication of electron neutrino appearance from an accelerator-produced off-axis muon neutrino beam

2011

The T2K experiment observes indications of $\nu_\mu\rightarrow \nu_e$ appearance in data accumulated with $1.43\times10^{20}$ protons on target. Six events pass all selection criteria at the far detector. In a three-flavor neutrino oscillation scenario with $|\Delta m_{23}^2|=2.4\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$, $\sin^2 2\theta_{23}=1$ and $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}=0$, the expected number of such events is 1.5$\pm$0.3(syst.). Under this hypothesis, the probability to observe six or more candidate events is 7$\times10^{-3}$, equivalent to 2.5$\sigma$ significance. At 90% C.L., the data are consistent with 0.03(0.04)$<\sin^2 2\theta_{13}<$ 0.28(0.34) for $\delta_{\rm CP}=0$ and a normal (inverted) hierarchy.

Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and glycosaminoglycans.

1995

The influence of diabetic nephropathy on urinary glycosaminoglycan distribution was assessed in 96 patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM, 49 female, age: 16 - 64 yrs, median 35; duration of IDDM: 0 - 43 yrs, median 13 yrs) in comparison to 103 healthy controls (57 female, 17 - 82 yrs, median 40 yrs). Glycosaminoglycan concentration of 24 h urine samples was determined by means of precipitation with cethylpyridinium chloride and potassium acetate in ethanol followed by a colorimetric test with carbazole. A marked difference (p = 0.0008) in urinary glycosaminoglycan excretion between patients (19.0, 12.4, 35.6 mg/24 h, median, 25th, 75th percentile) and controls (15.8, 10.4,…

Retrobulbar adipocytes and humoral immunity in Graves' ophthalmopathy

1993

As CT and MR-imaging revealed an enlargement of retrobulbar fat tissue in patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy, the role of the retrobulbar adipocytes in the pathogenesis of this disorder remains to be elucidated. To evaluate the in vitro influence of humoral immunity on retrobulbar adipose tissue, the effects of IgG and sera from 56 euthyroid ophthalmopathy patients and 53 controls on both porcine and human (patients' and controls') retrobulbar adipocytes were measured by means of several assays: An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was employed to reveal specific binding of antibodies to the adipocytes. Metabolic activity was determined by means of a colorimetric dimethyl thiazolium-diphe…

Immunohistochemical Staining of Retrobulbar Adipose Tissue in Graves' Ophthalmopathy

1994

An increase of retrobulbar adipose tissue has been shown by imaging techniques in patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO). Immunohistochemical staining was applied to investigate the involvement of different retrobulbar (especially adipose) tissue components in the autoimmune process of the disease. Cryostat sections from retrobulbar tissues of 15 GO patients and 11 controls were analyzed with a battery of monoclonal antibodies against CD2, CD4, CD8, CD11a, CD19/22, CD25, CD54, CD57, CD68, C3b, HLA-A, B, C, and HLA-DR. In contrast to controls, the retrobulbar adipose tissue showed an increase of HLA-DR expression, an activation of intercellular adhesion molecule I (ICAM-1, CD54), as well …

The T2K Experiment

2011

The T2K experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its main goal is to measure the last unknown lepton sector mixing angle {\theta}_{13} by observing {\nu}_e appearance in a {\nu}_{\mu} beam. It also aims to make a precision measurement of the known oscillation parameters, {\Delta}m^{2}_{23} and sin^{2} 2{\theta}_{23}, via {\nu}_{\mu} disappearance studies. Other goals of the experiment include various neutrino cross section measurements and sterile neutrino searches. The experiment uses an intense proton beam generated by the J-PARC accelerator in Tokai, Japan, and is composed of a neutrino beamline, a near detector complex (ND280), and a far detector (Super-Kamiokande)…

A family-based investigation of cold pain tolerance

2008

In the present study the question was addressed whether sensitivity to experimental pain stimuli differs between families, which are previously characterized by the degree of cold tolerance (very insensitive or very sensitive) of one family member. A total of 232 healthy medical students were screened for cold pain tolerance employing a cold pressor test. Subsequently 50 of them were investigated in detail under laboratory conditions. The water temperature was 1 degrees C, the maximum time in water 3 min, cold pain was rated on a 101 step numerical rating scale every 10s. Two of the most cold pain sensitive (shortest time in ice water) and insensitive (lowest ratings) students were selected…

Idiopathic trigeminal sensory neuropathy with gadolinium enhancement in the cisternal segment

2000

The authors report two patients with idiopathic trigeminal sensory neuropathy who showed gadolinium enhancement of the cisternal segment of the corresponding trigeminal nerve in cranial MRI. The resolution of these lesions in a repeat MRI suggests a similarity to Bell's palsy.

Sensitivity of laser-evoked potentials versus somatosensory evoked potentials in patients with multiple sclerosis

2003

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) play a less important role in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) than visually evoked potentials. Since standard SEPs only reflect the dorsal column function, we now investigated spinothalamic tract function in patients with MS using laser-evoked potentials (LEPs).LEPs to thulium laser stimuli (3ms, 540 mJ, 5mm diameter) were recorded from 3 midline positions (Fz, Cz, Pz) in 20 patients with MS, and 6 patients with possible but unconfirmed MS. Peak latencies and peak-to-peak amplitude of the vertex potential negativity (N2) and positivity (P2) were evaluated and compared with normative values from 22 healthy control subjects. Median and tibial ne…

Glycosaminoglycan Antibodies in Endocrine Ophthalmopathy

1993

An increased accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) in the orbita has been reported in endocrine ophthalmopathy (EO). In this study we investigated whether antibodies directed against GAG are present in the sera of 52 EO patients and 47 healthy controls. Three out of 52 patients exhibited low titers of antinuclear antibodies and all patients were negative for antibodies against extractable nuclear antigens. Isotype IgG antibodies were detected by means of an ELISA using hyaluronic acid and dermatan sulfate as antigens. Values were expressed as optical density at 405 nm. In comparison to the control group (0.445, 0.364, 0.588; median, 25th, 75th percentile) significantly (p < 0.001) higher…

Measurements of the T2K neutrino beam properties using the INGRID on-axis near detector

2012

Precise measurement of neutrino beam direction and intensity was achieved based on a new concept with modularized neutrino detectors. INGRID (Interactive Neutrino GRID) is an on-axis near detector for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. INGRID consists of 16 identical modules arranged in horizontal and vertical arrays around the beam center. The module has a sandwich structure of iron target plates and scintillator trackers. INGRID directly monitors the muon neutrino beam profile center and intensity using the number of observed neutrino events in each module. The neutrino beam direction is measured with accuracy better than 0.4 mrad from the measured profile center. The …

Paradoxical heat sensation in patients with multiple sclerosis

1996

Temperature thresholds were determined in 16 patients with probable or definite multiple sclerosis, in six patients with possible but unconfirmed multiple sclerosis and in 34 healthy subjects, using the method of limits and the thermal sensory limen (TSL) of the MarStock technique. A significant proportion of the patients had thresholds outside the 2.5 SD range for normal subjects, both for warmth detection threshold and TSL. In addition, 10 patients with probable or definite multiple sclerosis and one patient with possible multiple sclerosis reported a paradoxical heat sensation, i.e. a sensation of warmth elicited by a cold stimulus. This illusion was almost exclusively observed with the …
