The panel painting represinting Madonna con bambino e San Giovanni of Museo Diocesano of Palermo: Scientific studies for the restoration

The present research focuses on a painting on wood representing the Madonna con Bambino e San Giovanni, attributed to an unknown artist belonging to the Cretan-Venetian school, dated to the end of 16th century. The aim of the study is to provide a complete knowledge of the characteristics of the artefact in order to plane and perform a procedure according to conservative restoration. “SAGOME” IN SICILY: SUBJECTS, FUNCTIONS, TECHNIQUES AND THE CASE STUDY OF NICOSIA

This article analyzes the iconographic subjects, the practical functions and the compositional techniques of a particular form of artistic representation that was popular between the 18th and 19th centuries: these are the painted “sagome” (cut-outs) found in Sicily. Particular attention is paid to a series of six paintings, unknown until now, executed on shaped wooden panels and painted on both sides, which are stored in the library of the Convent of the Capuchin Friars Minor of Nicosia (Enna).

MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDY FOR THE DATING AND THE RESTORATION OF THE SAN VITO WOODEN PULPIT OF MUSEO DIOCESANO OF PALERMO

The aim of the present research is to investigate the execution techniques of San Vito wooden pulpit in the Museo Diocesano of Palermo and to provide helpful information to dating it in addition to technical, historical and artistic evaluations. In particular, this paper describes the application of analytical techniques (imaging diagnostics techniques, Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with X-ray Energy Dispersive spectroscopy Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) to better understand the pulpit characteristics, both support and decoration, useful to plan and perform the correct restoration.

The conservative intervention on four paintings preserved in the mother church of Partinico, in the province of Palermo, has allowed the recovery and enhancement of an important pictorial patrimony. The intervention, restoring the optimal conditions of the artifacts, has made possible the stylistic interpretation of the paintings, today referred to the environment of Neapolitan naturalism close to the classicist ways of Andrea Vaccaro.
