La Marguerite d’Aragon, muse, mère et Sainte Vierge

2014

Religious pictures which suddenly appear under the feather of Aragon in the collection Les Yeux d’Elsa (1942) to come back almost twenty years later in the poem Les Poetes (1960) are in more than a title incongruous in the poetic production of an atheistic and communist writer. This incongruity occurs for these two periods with the irruption in his neighbourhood of the poet's mother, among whom illness then death and inheritance of a family missal happen at the same time in the accomplishment of the collection of 1942, and whose memory is reanimated by the autobiographemes of the poem of 1960.

Aragon résistant : la construction d'un discours national

2015

It is well known that one of the most illustrious pages of the political and literary history of France is the one written by the Communist poet and novelist Aragon who united the idea of the nation with that of resistance, thus salvaging for the next generations the honor of the Republic. It is nonetheless true that his discourse advocating resistance and his calls, in various forms, for national unity are not only circumstantial. They participate in the progressive elaboration of a national myth that can be traced back to the 1930s and to Maurice Thorez, the leader of a party which added the adjective “French” to its name. It was Aragon's role to foster the literary aspect of this national…

Aragon et le choix du Sud dans les années quarante : enjeux nationaux et littéraires

2015

Aragon’s earlier writings had been deeply influenced by English and especially German languages and cultures. Nevertheless, Germany was to disappear between 1940 and 1942 as a source for his deeply referential poetry, letting southern poets emerge. The reasons for the new cultural orientation were obviously political, but literary as well, actually dating back to the thirties and to his discovery of how much courtly and love literatures owed to Italy, herself indebted to Occitan poetry.
