Constraining the Deep Origin of Parasitic Flatworms and Host-Interactions with Fossil Evidence

Novel fossil discoveries have contributed to our understanding of the evolutionary appearance of parasitism in flatworms. Furthermore, genetic analyses with greater coverage have shifted our views on the coevolution of parasitic flatworms and their hosts. The putative record of parasitic flatworms is consistent with extant host associations and so can be used to put constraints on the evolutionary origin of the parasites themselves. The future lies in new molecular clock analyses combined with additional discoveries of exceptionally preserved flatworms associated with hosts and coprolites. Besides direct evidence, the host fossil record and biogeography have the potential to constrain their…

A new species of Strunius(Sarcopterygii; Onychodontida) from Latvia; Lode quarry (Upper Devonian)

Abstract A new species of the genus Strunius has been found. It is distinct from the other Strunius species; S. rolandi and S. walteri in the shape of the gular and parasymphysial teeth. The sigmoid tooth tips are harpoon-shaped and are similar to those of Onychodus jaekeli. Strunius nov. sp. is more closely related to S. rolandi than to the type-species S. walteri.

The unique fossil assemblage from the Lode Quarry (Upper Devonian, Latvia)

The unique fossil fauna from the Lode clay quarry, lower Frasnian, Latvia, includes a diverse ichthyofauna of at least 15 taxa of agnathans and gnathostomes, representing most of the major taxa of Devonian vertebrates. Six new fish taxa (five species and one genus) were discovered during the last ten years. Exceptionally well-preserved juvenile fishes (<i>Asterolepis ornata, Lodeacanthus gaujicus</i>) provide unique data on ontogenetic change. Diverse arthropods are recorded. Parasitic platyhelminth remains in juvenile fish bodies is their first discovery in the fossil record, and represents the oldest parasitic association ever found. A complete faunal and floral list for the L…
