The editors and main collaborators to the influential Spanish libertarian magazine Estudios (Valencia, 1928-1937) showed a permanent interest in connecting the magazine with the main networks of global anarchism in the interwar years, and also with contemporary international campaigns in defense of birth control, eugenics, sexual reform, naturism or pacifism. As its predecessor did—the magazine Generacion Consciente (1923-1928)—, Estudios was linked to well-known militants, writers, scientists and propagandists in general of those ideas and practices in Europe and America. Orto. Revista de Documentacion Social, published in Valencia from 1932 to 1934, is a good example of cultural magazines in the Spanish labour movement, particularly in the world of anarcho-syndicalism. Marin Civera, its editor, sought to make Orto (which had a large and diverse range of contributors) a forum for convergence between the different working-class ideologies, united by the ideas of “Syndicalism”. El escritor, ensayista y militante anarquista Higinio Noja Ruiz publicó en 1932 la novela Un puente sobre el abismo en la Editorial Estudios de Valencia. En ella Noja abordó el tema de las guerras y la lucha contra ellas a través de su protagonista, Guillermo Arjona, un joven burgués mallorquín muy influido por su lectura de las novelas sobre la Primera Guerra Mundial y casi obsesionado con esta temática. Durante la tarde-noche del 6 de noviembre de 1936 comenzó el traslado a Valencia del gobierno republicano desde un Madrid asediado por las tropas sublevadas. La ciudad se convirtió así, y durante un año, en sede del gobierno legítimo y capital, en la práctica, de la República española. En el presente artículo se analiza cómo se ha abordado todo ello desde dos perspectivas diferentes, aunque estrechamente interconectadas: la historiografía y la memoria pública. In this article, the author reflects on the associative models chosen by Spanish working and popular classes since the middle of nineteenth century in order to defend their interests, especially in the case of the difussion of culture and education. It is remarkable the continuity and success of some inherited prototypes, as it happened with the «ateneos» until the years of the Spanish civil war. At the same time, workers' organizations tried to satisfy an extensive range of demands by developing multifunctional centres. Examples of these were the «Casas del Pueblo» (People's Houses) erected by the socialist movement.
