Abstract Background Many surgeons routinely place intraperitoneal drains after elective colorectal surgery. However, enhanced recovery after surgery guidelines recommend against their routine use owing to a lack of clear clinical benefit. This study aimed to describe international variation in intraperitoneal drain placement and the safety of this practice. The chapter is a state-of-the-art review of the research focused on children’s understanding of ethnic belonging and the development of ethnic attitudes, in which classic theories as well as recent changes and trends in this field of research are summarised.
