Family Register in British English: The First Approach to its Systematic Study

The present study looks into an unexplored area of research as it is the family register. An alternative to recording family conversations is the use of popular TV series, as their success lies in the audience s identification with their characters and their communicative style. This work analyses two highly popular series in UK. The results suggest that this register has its own communicative richness and internal variation, the knowledge of which may be of great help for students and professionals travelling to English-speaking countries and living or relating with native speakers in family environments.
The malleability behind terms referring to common professional roles: the current meaning of “boss” in British newspapers

L'objectiu de la present recerca és abordar la variació i ductilitat de conceptes aparentment clars i inequívocs relacionats amb els rols professionals habituals. L'estudi se centra en les estructures semàntiques, i subsegüents models cognitius, associats amb el terme 'boss', tal com són expressats i transmesos en l'actualitat a través dels grans mitjans de comunicació britànics. L'anàlisi lingüística, qualitatiu i quantitatiu, d'un corpus significatiu de textos en els quals apareix aquest terme mostra clares diferències en el seu significat, depenent de factors clau com l'orientació sociopolítica i ideològica de la plataforma de publicació.

Abstract The world of professional communication includes so many innovative practices that a 25-century-old typology on repetition like Aristotle's or even a 40-year-old theory on relevance like Grice's might seem obsolete or hardly appealing for today's lecturers. The level of context dependence of engagement markers in Peninsular Spanish and US business websites

This paper examines the impact of Spaniards’ and North-Americans’ level of context dependence (Hall, 1976) on the engagement markers (Hyland & Tse, 2004) used on the presentation page of 100 business websites from the toy sector (50 from Spain and 50 from the US). Following an observational and a quantitative analysis, the findings reveal remarkable statistical differences in the interactional discourse of this digital genre, which may be a valuable source of information for export companies to introduce their products abroad by means of their business websites. Analysing metaphor in the family register through scripted sitcom conversations

Abstract This study looks into the patterns of metaphor use in the family register of scripted sitcom conversations. Previous studies of metaphor in conversation adopted different approaches to the concept of register, resulting in a rich but complex picture (Cameron, 2003, 2007, 2008; Deignan, Littlemore & Semino, 2013; Kaal, 2012). Corpus Analysis and Register Variation: a field in need of an update

Abstract This study reviews the development of research on register variation (RV) over the last century to the present, emphasizing the influence of corpus analyses on its greatest advances and also on its major weaknesses and ambiguities. In search of practical and useful methods to analyse language registers, in the second part of the paper, the authors sketch a different approach to RV which has been used over the last ten years in language teaching at university level and professional communication training.
