Fifty Years of International Catholic–Lutheran Dialogue: Much Consensus, Little Fellowship?

This article presents an overview and an assessment of the international Catholic–Lutheran dialogue through fifty years. During the process, a theological rapprochement that few had dreamt of when the work began has been manifested. In the text Facing Unity (1984), even a detailed plan for a processual realization of Catholic–Lutheran church fellowship is sketched. However, this plan has not been implemented, and the achieved doctrinal convergence has not been transformed into concrete forms of unity. The author also seeks to uncover some of the main causes of this impasse, largely reflecting challenges in contemporary ecumenism.

The chapter gives an account of the roots of the modern ecumenical movement, of the latter’s social and ecclesial context, and of its first organizational manifestations leading up to the World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh 1910. This predominantly Protestant movement developed in a setting marked by the climax of modernity and increasing secularization in northern societies, colonization and missionary enterprises in the south, polarization in theology, and denominationalism in church life. Kritiske ytringer om pave Frans framsettes som regel på konservativt og tradisjonalistisk katolsk hold. Denne artikkelen sikter på å presentere en progressivt fundert kritikk av det nåværende pontifikatet. Frans krediteres for gode intensjoner, pastoralt lederskap og motstand mot klerikalistiske holdninger. Men da han ikke har maktet – og kanskje heller ikke tilstrekkelig klart ønsket – å endre kirkens utdaterte hierarkiske struktur, er han ingen løsning på de store utfordringene Den katolske kirke lenge har stått overfor.
