Molecular Bases for Sensitivity to Tubulin-Binding Herbicides in Green Foxtail

2004

Abstract We investigated the molecular bases for resistance to several classes of herbicides that bind tubulins in green foxtail (Setaria viridis L. Beauv.). We identified two α- and two β-tubulin genes in green foxtail. Sequence comparison between resistant and sensitive plants revealed two mutations, a leucine-to-phenylalanine change at position 136 and a threonine-to-isoleucine change at position 239, in the gene encoding α2-tubulin. Association of mutation at position 239 with herbicide resistance was demonstrated using near-isogenic lines derived from interspecific pairings between green foxtail and foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beauv.), and herbicide sensitivity bioassays combine…

Status of herbicide-resistant Lolium populations in wheat fields in Tunisia

2013

The evolution of herbicide resistance in weeds is a worldwide phenomenon in modern cropping systems. The presence of resistant populations can severely hamper herbicide-based weed control, thus leading to the need for a more accurate use of these products. In Tunisia, the first report of evolved herbicide resistance concerned Lolium rigidum populations collected in wheat fields in northern Tunisia in 1996 and found to be resistant to acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase-inhibiting (ACCase) herbicides. The objective of this study is to detect and characterise herbicide resistance in ryegrass (Lolium spp). The sensitivity of nine ryegrass populations, collected in wheat fields in northern Tunisia, w…

Mutant ACCase alleles endowing herbicide resistance have a direct effect on seed germination

2013

Germination and emergence dynamics and herbicide resistance are adaptive traits crucial for weed persistence in arable fields. Herbicide resistance alleles can have pleiotropic effects on other traits. We investigated the pleiotropic effects of acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) alleles L1781, N2041 or G2078 on seed germination and seedling emergence in the grass weed Alopecurus myosuroides (black-grass). We used black-grass populations with homogenised genetic backgrounds that segregated for L1781, N2041 or G2078 ACCase alleles. In two series of experiments, germination dynamics and seedling growth were compared among seeds containing embryos carrying no, one or two copies of a given m…
