φ production in annihilation at rest

1991

Abstract We report on measurements of the branching ratios for φ production in p p annihilation at rest in H 2 gas. Branching ratios for φπ 0 , φη, φϱ 0 , φω and φπ + π − are determined for two data sets with different contributions of annihilations from S and P states of the p p system. The branching ratios are compared to corresponding annihilation modes where the φ is replaced by an ω meson. We conclude that φ production is in most reactions enhanced with respect to the expectation based on the OZI rule. In annihilations from the spin triplet ground state of antiprotonic hydrogen into φπ the OZI rule is violated dramatically.

Study ofB−→DK−π+π−andB−→Dπ−π+π−decays and determination of the CKM angleγ

We report a study of the suppressed B- -> DK-pi(+)pi(-) and favored B- -> D pi(-)pi(+)pi(-) decays, where the neutral D meson is detected through its decays to the K--/+pi(+/-) and CP -even K+K- and pi(+)pi(-) final states. The measurement is carried out using a proton-proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1). We observe the first significant signals in the CP - even final states of the D meson for both the suppressed B- -> DK-pi(+)pi(-) and favored B- -> D pi(-)pi(+)pi(-) modes, as well as in the doubly Cabibbo suppressed D -> K+pi(-) final state of the B- -> D pi(-)pi(+)pi(-) decay. Antiproton-proton annihilation at rest in H2 gas into π+ π− π0

Antiproton-proton annihilation at rest into π+ π− π0 has been studied by stopping antiprotons from LEAR in a H2 gas target at normal temperature and pressure. The reaction is observed in coincidence withL X-rays which are emitted in the cascade of\(\bar pp\) atoms. The X-rays populate one of the angular momentumL=1 states of a\(\bar pp\) atom which then annihilates. A spinparity analysis of the π+ π− π0 Dalitz plot gives contributions from the threeP states from which annihilation into three pions is allowed. Amplitude analysis ofB0→D¯0K+π−decays

The Dalitz plot distribution of B-0 -> (D) over bar K-0(+)pi(-) decays is studied using a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb(-1) of pp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The data are described by an amplitude model that contains contributions from intermediate K* (892)(0), K*(1410)(0), K-2*(1430)(0) and D-2(*)(2460)(-) resonances. The model also contains components to describe broad structures, including the K-0(*)(1430)(0) and D-0(*)(2400)(-) resonances, in the K pi S-wave and the D pi S-and P-waves. The ASTERIX spectrometer at LEAR

The ASTERIX spectrometer has been used to study the formation and the ground state of the pp atom and exclusive final states of pp annihilation at rest in a H2 gas target at NTP, using antiprotons from the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN. The article describes the mechanical construction of the apparatus, the trigger logic, the chamber readout, and the data acquisition system. The detector calibration and the offline processing of the 55 million reconstructed events are illustrated. An overview is given about the new physics results obtained by the experiment.

Large-angle production of charged pions by 3 GeV/c - 12.9 GeV/c protons on beryllium, aluminium and lead targets

Measurements of the double-differential pi(+/-) production cross-section in the range of momentum 100 MeV/c <= p < 800 MeV/c and angle 0.35 rad <= theta < 2.15 rad in proton-beryllium, proton-aluminium and proton-lead collisions are presented. First observation and amplitude analysis of theB−→D+K−π−decay

The B- -> D+K-pi(-) decay is observed in a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb(-1) of pp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. Its branching fraction is measured to be B(B- -> D+K-pi(-)) = (7.31 +/- 0.19 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.39) x 10(-5) where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the branching fraction of the normalization channel B- -> D+pi(-)pi(-), respectively. An amplitude analysis of the resonant structure of the B- -> D+K-pi(-) decay is used to measure the contributions from quasi-two-body B- -> D-0* (2400)K-0(-), B- -> D-2* (2460)K-0(-), and B- -> D-J* (2760)K-0(-) decays, as well as from nonresonant sources. Measurement of the lifetime of theBc+meson using theBc+→J/ψπ+decay mode

The difference in total widths between the B+c and B+ mesons is measured using 3.0fb−1 of data collected by the LHCb experiment in 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Through the study of the time evolution of B+c→J/ψπ+ and B+→J/ψK+ decays, the width difference is measured to beΔΓ≡ΓB+c−ΓB+=4.46±0.14±0.07mm−1c,where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The known lifetime of the B+ meson is used to convert this to a precise measurement of the B+c lifetime,τB+c=513.4±11.0±5.7fs,where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Co-Rotating Beams of Antiprotons and H- in LEAR and High Resolution Spectroscopy of pp̄ Atoms in Flight

Beams of pp atoms flighting in vacuum with adjustable velocity have been proposed to study the spectroscopy of protonium atoms with high energy resolution (Ae/E down to 10-5) by using differential absorber foils and conventional X-ray detectors for emission spectroscopy and fixed frequency high power radiation sources for induced spectroscopy1. This aproach would lead to an improvement by more than two orders of magnitude versus the possibilities of “conventional” experiments in the field of protonium planned at LEAR2, and would give ways to measure with high accuracy effects of electromagnetic and strong interactions on the atomic levels of protonium.

Study of the rare Bs0 and B0 decays into the π+π−μ+μ− final state

A search for the rare decays B0s→π+π−μ+μ− and B0→π+π−μ+μ− is performed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1 collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Decay candidates with pion pairs that have invariant mass in the range 0.5-1.3 GeV/c2 and with muon pairs that do not originate from a resonance are considered. The first observation of the decay B0s→π+π−μ+μ− and the first evidence of the decay B0→π+π−μ+μ− are obtained and the branching fractions are measured to be B(B0s→π+π−μ+μ−)=(8.6±1.5(stat)±0.7(syst)±0.7(norm))×10−8 and B(B0→π+π−μ+μ−)=(2.11±0.51(stat)±0.15(syst)±0.16(norm))×10−8, where the third unc…

Precision Measurement ofCPViolation inBS0→J/ΨK+K−Decays

The time-dependent CP asymmetry in B-S(0) -> J/Psi K+K- decays is measured using pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1), collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. In a sample of 96 000 B-S(0) -> J/Psi K+K- decays, the CP-violating phase phi(s) is measured, as well as the decay widths GL and GH of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B-s(0)-(B) over bar (0)(s) system. Absolute momentum calibration of the HARP TPC

In the HARP experiment the large-angle spectrometer is using a cylindrical TPC as main tracking and particle identification detector. The momentum scale of reconstructed tracks in the TPC is the most important systematic error for the majority of kinematic bins used for the HARP measurements of the double-differential production cross-section of charged pions in proton interactions on nuclear targets at large angle. \(N\bar N\) annihilation at rest into five pions was studied in the ASTERIX spectrometer by stopping antiprotrons from LEAR in a H2 or D2 gas target. In\(\bar pp\) annihilations in H2 leading to the π+π−π+π−π0 final state, the invariant mass spectra of two, three, and four pions show no evidence for any new narrow states. In\(\bar pn \to \pi ^ + \pi ^ - \pi ^ + \pi ^ - \pi ^ - \) the difference of the four pion mass spectra recoiling against a π− and those recoiling against a π+ shows a resonance-like structure (“ζ (1480)”), confirming a previous analysis with a smaller event sample. Dalitz plot analysis ofB0→D¯0π+π−decays

The resonant substructures of $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 \pi^+\pi^-$ decays are studied with the Dalitz plot technique. In this study a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected by the LHCb detector is used. The branching fraction of the $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 \pi^+\pi^-$ decay in the region $m(\overline{D}^0\pi^{\pm})>2.1$ GeV$/c^2$ is measured to be $(8.46 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.40) \times 10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the last arises from the normalisation channel $B^0 \to D^*(2010)^-\pi^+$. The πd scattering length from Kα X-rays

Abstract X-rays from the K α transition (2P → 1S) of the π − d mesic atom have been observed. Their energy, 2592.8 −2.0 +1.6 , has been measured by the critical absorber technique, using the M V absorption edge in bismuth. The strong interaction shift in the 1S state is −4.8 eV, corresponding to a scattering length a ( π d) = −(0.052 −0.017 +0.022 ) m π −1 , in agreement with recent calculations. The intensity ratio K α /K total = 0.548 ± 0.015.

Quantum numbers of theX(3872)state and orbital angular momentum in itsρ0J/ψdecay

2015

Angular correlations in B+→X(3872)K+ decays, with X(3872)→ρ0J/ψ, ρ0→π+π− and J/ψ→μ+μ−, are used to measure orbital angular momentum contributions and to determine the JPC value of the X(3872) meson. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. This determination, for the first time performed without assuming a value for the orbital angular momentum, confirms the quantum numbers to be JPC=1++. The X(3872) is found to decay predominantly through S wave and an upper limit of 4% at 95% C.L. is set on the fraction of D wave.

Study ofCPviolation inB∓→Dh∓(h=K,π) with the modesD→K∓π±π0,D→π+π−π0andD→K+K−π0

An analysis of the decays of B--/+ -> DK -/+ and B--/+ -> D pi(-/+) is presented in which the D meson is reconstructed in the three-body final states K--/+pi(+/-)pi(0), pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and K+K-pi(0). Using data from LHCb corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) of pp collisions, measurements of several CP observables are performed. First observations are obtained of the suppressed Atwood-Dunietz-Soni decay B--/+ -> [pi K-+(+/-)pi(0)](D)pi(-/+) and the quasi-Gronau-London-Wyler decay B--/+ -> [K+K-pi(0)](D)pi(-/+). The results are interpreted in the context of the unitarity triangle angle gamma and related parameters.

Antiproton-proton annihilation at rest intoπ + π − η ′ andπ + π − η from atomicS andP states

We have measured the branching ratios for\(\bar pp\) annihilation at rest intoπ+π−η andπ+π−η′ in hydrogen gas in two data samples that have different fractions ofS-wave andP-wave initial states. The branching ratios are derived from a comparison with the topological branching ratio for\(\bar pp\) annihilations into four charged pions of (49±4)% and the branching ratio intoπ+π−π+π−π0 of (18.7±1.6)%. We observe theE(1420) resonance in the invariant mass spectrum (K0)missK± π∓ with massME=1413±8 MeV/c2 and widthГE=62 ± 16MeV/c2 and find evidence for the production of thef1(1285). The absolute branching ratio of\(\bar p\)p → π+ π−E0,E0 →K0LK±π∓ at (61±6)%P wave annihilation is (3.0±0.9)·10−4 of all annihilations. The observed suppression of theE production fromP wave with respect to theS wave together with some simple selection rules suggest that the quantum numbers of theE(1420) areJpc=0−+ and not I++.

Observation of Two NewΞb−Baryon Resonances

Two structures are observed close to the kinematic threshold in the Ξb0π- mass spectrum in a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0fb-1, recorded by the LHCb experiment. In the quark model, two baryonic resonances with quark content bds are expected in this mass region: the spin-parity JP=(1/2)+ and JP=(3/2)+ states, denoted Ξb′- and Ξb∗-. Interpreting the structures as these resonances, we measure the mass differences and the width of the heavier state to be m(Ξb′-)-m(Ξb0)-m(π-)=3.653±0.018±0.006MeV/c2, m(Ξb∗-)-m(Ξb0)-m(π-)=23.96±0.12±0.06MeV/c2, Γ(Ξb∗-)=1.65±0.31±0.10MeV, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systema…

Measurement of the production cross-section of positive pions in the collision of 8.9 GeV/c protons on beryllium

The double-differential production cross-section of positive pions, $d^2\sigma^{\pi^{+}}/dpd\Omega$, measured in the HARP experiment is presented. The incident particles are 8.9 GeV/c protons directed onto a beryllium target with a nominal thickness of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. The measured cross-section has a direct impact on the prediction of neutrino fluxes for the MiniBooNE and SciBooNE experiments at Fermilab. After cuts, 13 million protons on target produced about 96,000 reconstructed secondary tracks which were used in this analysis. Comparison of large-angle production of charged pions with incident protons on cylindrical long and short targets

The HARP Collaboration has presented measurements of the double-differential pi(+/-) production cross section in the range of momentum 100 MeV/c <= p <= 800 MeV/c and angle 0.35 rad <=theta <= 2.15 rad with proton beams hitting thin nuclear targets. In many applications the extrapolation to long targets is necessary. In this article the analysis of data taken with long (one interaction length) solid cylindrical targets made of carbon, tantalum, and lead is presented. First Observation of Top Quark Production in the Forward Region

Top quark production in the forward region in proton-proton collisions is observed for the first time. The W + b final state with W → μν is reconstructed using muons with a transverse momentum, p[subscript T], larger than 25 GeV in the pseudorapidity range 2.0 20  GeV. The results are based on data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.0 and 2.0  fb[superscript -1] collected at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV by LHCb. The associated production of a W boson with a jet originating from either a light parton or heavy-flavor quark is studied in the forward region using proton-proton collisions.
