May Measurement Month 2018: a pragmatic global screening campaign to raise awareness of blood pressure by the International Society of Hypertension.

2019

Abstract Aims Raised blood pressure (BP) is the biggest contributor to mortality and disease burden worldwide and fewer than half of those with hypertension are aware of it. May Measurement Month (MMM) is a global campaign set up in 2017, to raise awareness of high BP and as a pragmatic solution to a lack of formal screening worldwide. The 2018 campaign was expanded, aiming to include more participants and countries. Methods and results Eighty-nine countries participated in MMM 2018. Volunteers (≥18 years) were recruited through opportunistic sampling at a variety of screening sites. Each participant had three BP measurements and completed a questionnaire on demographic, lifestyle, and envi…

Bonding behavior of Bi-metal-deposits produced by hybrid cold spray additive manufacturing

2022

Abstract Cold spraying (CS) is one of the most recently used additive manufacturing (AM) processes that allow forming large 3D objects efficiently without severe thermal effects. However, due to some limitations of the CSAM process, it is difficult to achieve the desired geometry with high precision. As a potential solution to this issue, CSAM process coupled machining, that is, hybrid addition and subtraction manufacturing, is proposed to achieve desired accuracy and reliable shape. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the mechanical reliability of multilayer deposits deposited by CSAM + machining processes before that. In this work, different bi-deposits were obtained via hybrid CSAM. The…

Radioactivity control strategy for the JUNO detector

2021

JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day, therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration…

HCHs and DDTs in sediment-dwelling animals from the Yangtze Estuary, China

2005

HCHs and DDTs in sediment-dwelling animals including mollusks and crabs from the Yangtze Estuary were deter- mined by GC-ECD. Levels of t-HCH were in the range of 1.2-5.5 ng g 1 and averaged 3.5 ng g 1 in mollusks, while t-DDT concentrations ranged from 26.0 to 68.8 ng g 1 , with a mean of 34.5 ng g 1 . In crabs t-HCH concentrations var- ied from 2.0 to 25.7 ng g 1 and averaged 13.8 ng g 1 , whereas the concentrations of t-DDT were in the range of 1.5- 24.8 ng g 1 with a mean value of 5.9 ng g 1 . The HCHs and DDTs levels depend on geographical position and sources, showing the high levels at fresh water area in the estuary, such as XP, CM and LHK sites, and lower at brackis…

Influence of spray trajectories on characteristics of cold-sprayed copper deposits

2021

Abstract Industrial robots are widely used in cold spray (CS) as well as thermal spray to produce various coatings by precisely controlling kinematic parameters during the process. However, the robot trajectory and its effect on the characteristics of CS deposits are important, but not fully studied. This article introduces four typical spray trajectories, including zigzag path, cross path, parallel path, and spiral path, to elaborate thick CS Cu deposits, and characterizes the corresponding Cu deposits, respectively. The experimental results revealed that the spray trajectories have a major influence on the associated thermal history and the residual stress distribution. However, no signif…

Erosion Behavior of PS-PVD Thermal Barrier Coatings and the Effect of Composite Coating (PS-PVD + APS) Thickness

2020

In this work, feather-column 7YSZ thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were prepared by plasma spray-physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD). The anti-particle erosion test was carried out at room temperature to study the erosion behavior and failure mechanism of PS-PVD TBCs. The results showed that the particle erosion process of the PS-PVD TBCs experienced three stages of high-rate, medium-rate and slow-rate erosion. In order to improve the particle erosion resistance of the PS-PVD TBCs, different thicknesses of dense-layered coatings were prepared on the surface of the PS-PVD TBCs by air plasma spraying (APS). The effect of dense-layered thickness on the erosion behaviour of PS-PVD TBCs was discus…

Microscopic Insights Into the Formation of Methanesulfonic Acid–Methylamine–Ammonia Particles Under Acid-Rich Conditions

2022

Understanding the microscopic mechanisms of new particle formation under acid-rich conditions is of significance in atmospheric science. Using quantum chemistry calculations, we investigated the microscopic formation mechanism of methanesulfonic acid (MSA)–methylamine (MA)–ammonia (NH3) clusters. We focused on the binary (MSA)2n-(MA)n and ternary (MSA)3n-(MA)n-(NH3)n, (n = 1–4) systems which contain more acid than base molecules. We found that the lowest-energy isomers in each system possess considerable thermodynamic and dynamic stabilities. In studied cluster structures, all bases are protonated, and they form stable ion pairs with MSA, which contribute to the charge transfer and the stab…

Calibration strategy of the JUNO experiment

2021

We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination. JUNO sensitivity to low energy atmospheric neutrino spectra

2021

Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $\nu_e$ and $\nu_\mu$ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then pro…
