Improving countries' health emergency preparedness: embedding the International Health Regulations requirements into national health systems

The International Health Regulations (IHR) 2005, as the overarching instrument for global health security, are designed to prevent and cope with major international public health threats. But poor implementation in countries hampers their effectiveness. In the wake of a number of major international health crises, such as the 2014 Ebola and 2016 Zika outbreaks, and the ndings of a number of high-level assessments of the global response to these crises, it has become clear that there is a need for more joined-up thinking between health system strengthening activities and health security efforts for prevention, alert and response. WHO is working directly with its Member States to promote this…

Socio-economic cost and health-related quality of life of burn victims in Spain

Abstract Objectives The aim of the study was to determine the economic burden (direct and indirect costs) of burn victims and the impact of burn on health-related quality of life in Spain. Methods In 2003, a cross-sectional study was carried out with 898 burned people. Data regarding demographic features, health resource use, informal care, indirect costs and quality of life were prospectively collected through hospital admission databases and questionnaires filled out by burn victims and caregivers. Results The mean annual cost (direct and indirect) per burn patient was US$ 99,773. The most important categories of costs were those of in-patient care and temporary and permanent disability. …

Cyano-Bridged Bimetallic Assemblies from Hexacyanometalate, [M(CN)6]3- (M = MnIII and FeIII), and [M(N4-macrocycle)]2+ (M = FeIII, NiII and ZnII) Building Blocks. Syntheses, Multidimensional Structures, and Magnetic Properties

Reactions between [M(N4-macrocycle)]2+ (M = ZnII and NiII; macrocycle ligands are either CTH = d,l-5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane or cyclam = 1,4, 8, 11-tetrazaazaciclotetradecane) and [M(CN)6]3- (M = FeIII and MnIII) give rise to cyano-bridged assemblies with 1D linear chain and 2D honeycomblike structures. The magnetic measurements on the 1D linear chain complex [Fe(cyclam)][Fe(CN)6]·6H2O 1 points out its metamagnetic behavior, where the ferromagnetic interaction operates within the chain and the antiferromagnetic one between chains. The Neel temperature, TN, is 5.5 K and the critical field at 2 K is 1 T. The unexpected ferromagnetic intrachain interaction can…

Cholesterol and saturated fat intake determine the effect of polymorphisms at ABCG5/ABCG8 genes on lipid levels in children.

Purpose: Analysis of mutations in genes of the cholesterol metabolic pathway has not completely explained the interindividual variability of blood cholesterol concentrations attributed to gene–nutrient interactions. Thus, we analyzed polymorphisms in the ABCG5 and ABCG8 genes, involved in the regulation of intestinal cholesterol absorption, with special interest in a potential interaction with diet to determine lipid levels. Methods: The polymorphisms ABCG5 C1950G (Gln604Glu) and ABCG8 C1895T (Ala640Val) were determined by polymerase chain reaction and restriction analysis in 1227 healthy school children, aged 6 to 8 years. Results: No significant differences were found in blood lipid level…

Why do we choose to address health 2020?

What can we predict for 2020? Solar and lunar eclipses? Without a doubt. Climate change? Most likely. Rising sea levels? Signs point to yes. Beyond that, however, in the world of human events, it is best to be cautious. In the field of health and medicine (or anywhere else, for that matter), no one predicted the most important discoveries of the twentieth century. Economists were no more successful in foreseeing financial or economic crises. The pundits did not forecast any of the recent wars, disruptions or even the recent Arab Spring movements indeed, political experts turned out to be only slightly more accurate than dart-throwing chimpanzees in divining what was in store for the future.…

The Global Public Health curriculum: Specific global health competences: Universal health coverage

The 2nd edition of the Global Public Health Curriculum has been published in the South Eastern European Journal of Public Health, end of 2016 as a special volume (editors Ulrich Laaser & Florida Beluli) at: http://www.seejph.com/index.php/seejph/article/view/106/82. An overview of the published modules is available in the background section of the curriculum as an introductory module.

Standard international recommendations for gestational weight gain: suitability for our population

Background: gestational weight gain (GWG) is one of the most commonly used indicators in prenatal care, and probably the most influential factor in perinatal outcomes. Objective: to determine the extent to which the GWG of pregnant women from the Ribera Health Department (Valencia) meets GWG international standards as recommended by the U.S. Institute of Medicine (IOM). Methods: a retrospective observational study of a sample of 4,361 women who gave birth at Hospital Universitario de la Ribera between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2015. Pregnant women were classified according to GWG international recommendations: adequate weight gain, above and below. Results: a higher GWG increases the…

A Rational Design for Imidazolate-Bridged Linear Trinuclear Compounds from Mononuclear Copper(II) Complexes with 2-[((Imidazol-2-ylmethylidene)amino)ethyl]pyridine (HL):  Syntheses, Structures, and Magnetic Properties of [Cu(L)(hfac)M(hfac)2Cu(hfac)(L)] (M = ZnII, CuII, MnII)

Two mononuclear copper(II) complexes with the unsymmetrical tridentate ligand 2-[((imidazol-2-ylmethylidene)amino)ethyl]pyridine (HL), [Cu(HL)(H2O)](ClO4)2.2H2O (1) and [Cu(HL)Cl2] (2), have been prepared and characterized. The X-ray analysis of 2 revealed that the copper(II) ion assumes a pentacoordinated square pyramidal geometry with an N3Cl2 donor set. When 1 and 2 are treated with an equimolecular amount of potassium hydroxide, the deprotonation of the imidazole moiety promotes a self-assembled process, by coordination of the imidazolate nitrogen atom to a Cu(II) center of an adjacent unit, leading to the polynuclear complexes [[Cu(L)(H2O)](ClO4)]n (3) and [[Cu(L)Cl].2H2O]n (4). Variab…
