The aim of the article is to develop criteriology that would enable to evaluate authenticity of particular religions and to distinguish authentic religions from pseudoreligious phenomena. Given the complexity of the problematics, first the historical background of the issue was presented and the attention was paid to its contemporary context. The article is an attempt to answer the question about the relation between tradition and the development of theological cognition. The church from the first centuries was aware that allegiance to the council tenets exceeds a technical repetition of council`s formulas. It is clear that a belief in dogma assumes openness to both the past and the future.In the article two approaches to tradition are criticized: archeological and enthusiastic. The concept of religion is a fundamental concept of religiological sciences. Still it is not devoid of difficulties. Its critics attempt to prove that plurality and variety of religious phenomena excludes the possibility to define religion. On the other hand the lack of the general concept of religion constitutes a serious problem for theology of religion since it is difficult to study relationships between Christianity and other religions not knowing what religion is and what its theological essence is.
